A championship-worthy resume

Meet Brett Miller, who has jumped to work with the Boston Red Sox after being discovered through Monster’s ‘Cool Jobs’ program.

A championship-worthy resume

Job candidates often face a large amount of competition, but can you imagine going up against 55,000 candidates — and getting the job?

This is exactly what Brett Miller accomplished.

He’s employed as the first-ever associate in the Boston Red Sox’ new Rotational Business Initiative. He found the job by way of a search on Monster, through the company’s “Cool Jobs” program.

When applying, Miller knew it was a long shot. When he found out he’d gotten the job, he was utterly stunned.

“Literally on the phone I was at a loss for words,” he said in an interview last week at Fenway Park, his new workplace. “It took a second to really process, and I don’t think it really hit me until I was up here.”

Miller, 23, is from Centreville, Va. With a degree in business management from Old Dominion University in hand, he took a temporary job as a project assistant with a friend’s construction company last year. He came home from work one day, created a Monster account, and two weeks later saw the Red Sox job listing.

“The words were jumping off the screen to me,” he said. “It seemed like they were describing me in the requirements for this job. It seemed perfect.”

He started with the Sox in November — one month after the team won its third World Series in nine years — and will take on tasks across a variety of activities with the team. In fact, he recently transitioned from baseball operations (where he has been since joining) to the marketing team.

Miller shoots high when asked about long-term aspirations — he says ultimately he’d love to be the general manager of a sports team — and why shouldn’t he? He did beat out more candidates than there are seats at Fenway for this job.

What set him apart?

“I’ve asked myself that a lot,” he said. “I think I was able to convey how bad I wanted it and how much I was going to give 100 percent every single day, every single second, to be the best I can be.”

He said it was a matter of being ready and connecting with the people in the interview room. But it all started with taking the time to apply.

His advice to those searching for their next job is simple: “Go for it.”

“No matter how daunting a job looks … I say go for it, what do you have to lose?” he said. “If you go for it things like this can happen.”
