- Keyword Search Tips
There are three different ways to search for jobs on Monster.com: QuickSearch, Full Search, and Browse Jobs.
QuickSearch (Top | Job Search)
-
From our homepage you can search all of the jobs in our database by typing keyword(s) in the blank field provided under 'QuickSearch'. Keywords are words or phrases describing your job preference. Keywords can be a job title or skill, the name of an industry or company, or a location. Examples include programmer, SAP, telecommunications, North Dakota, human resources, America Online, marketing, Cincinnati, etc. [Keyword Search Tips]
Type in keyword(s) that describe the position you are seeking and click 'go'. Job postings in the database matching your keyword(s) will be retrieved for you to view. You can continue to narrow your search on the next screen by typing another keyword in the blank field and then clicking on 'Subsearch'. You can also limit your search to only recent postings by clicking the arrow by 'All Jobs'. Select one of the choices from the pull-down menu.
Zones QuickSearch: Each Zone has a QuickSearch function specialized to its particular career stage or industry (e.g., Monster Campus has entry level jobs). You can access the Zone that suits your career stage or industry (Campus, Midcareer, Executive, etc.) by clicking 'Visit our Zones' on the menu at the top of the page.
Full Search (by location, category, or keyword) (Top | Job Search)
-
To get to the Job Search page, select 'Job Search' from the menu at the top of the page. From this page, you can search for jobs by location, category, or keyword(s).
Location and Category: If you're not sure which location or category to choose, pick all which may be applicable. To make multiple selections, hold down the Control key (PC) or the Command/Apple key (Mac) while clicking the desired selections. Choose 'Select All' to choose all items in the list.
Keyword: Keywords are not required. Use the 'Keyword' function to return more targeted results. Keywords are words or phrases describing your job preference. Keywords can be a job title or skill, the name of an industry or company, or a location. Examples include programmer, SAP, telecommunications, North Dakota, human resources, America online, marketing, Cincinnati, etc. [Keyword Search Tips]
Now click 'Search Jobs'. You can continue to narrow your search on the next screen by typing another keyword in the blank field and then clicking on 'Subsearch'.
Browse jobs (Top | Job Search)
-
Go to the Job Search page by clicking 'Job Search' on the menu at the top of the page. You can browse job listings by clicking on one of the following categories under the heading 'Browse Jobs by' in the right-hand shaded column:
US City/State: If you know the city, state, or region where you'd like to work, begin your search here. Click on a specific state on the map (or state abbreviation below the map) or one of the regional listings to the right. When your results appear, you can continue to refine your search by entering a keyword and clicking 'Subsearch'.
International: If you are interested in working abroad, begin your search here. Click on the map or country/region listing to begin your search. When your results appear, you can continue to refine your search by entering a keyword and clicking 'Subsearch'.
Company: To search for jobs at a particular company, select the appropriate letter of the alphabet. Scroll down the list until you see the company in which you are interested. Click on the name to see valuable information about the company as well as its available job listings. Not all companies with job postings are listed here. This is an optional service for employers.
Industry: If you would like to search jobs in a particular industry, begin here. When you choose your industry, a list of companies with related job opportunities will appear. You can then click on any of the companies' names to access their Monster.com profile. At this point, you can either browse all their available jobs or do a 'Subsearch' to look for specific opportunities with that employer.
More information (Top | Job Search)
-
Search Results Page
The Search Results page will tell you how many jobs match your search criteria. Jobs are then listed by date posted, location, job title, and company name. All jobs appear in reverse chronological order, i.e. the most recent job posted to Monster.com's database will appear at the top of your Search Results page.
Some of the jobs that are posted come from clients that post jobs in newspapers. If a company in Boston, MA takes an ad in an Austin, TX newspaper (for a Boston, MA job), that company expects us to post their job in the same fashion--i.e. post the Boston job in an Austin location in order to recruit talent from Austin. So the job postings that you're seeing are from companies that want to attract people from the location that you're searching in. They may not necessarily be physically located in that location.
If your search matches more than 50 jobs, click 'Next' at the bottom of the screen to access more available jobs.
Subsearches
At the top of every Search Results page, a 'Subsearch' box will appear. Subsearching allows you to further refine your search from your current screen without having to start from the beginning. For example, if you performed a search using the keyword "publishing" which retrieved 1,500 listings, you could then do a Subsearch for "editor" to narrow your search within those same 1,500 listings. You can conduct additional Subsearches until you get the results you want. Names of states and cities can also be used in your Subsearch.
To retrieve even more job listings, click on the arrow by 'All Jobs' to pull down 'Last 7 days', 'Last 60 days', etc. The system will search for 'All Jobs' unless another choice is selected.
Apply online
You can apply for a job online by clicking 'Apply online' at the bottom of most job description pages. If you have a resume posted on our site, a copy of that resume is automatically submitted to the company via email. If you do not have a resume posted on our site, you will need to submit one before you can use the 'Apply Online' function.
Some companies opt not to have the 'Apply Online' function, or have it link to an application form on their own website. In these cases you will not be able to use your Monster.com resume.
Keyword Search Tips (Top | Job Search)
-
Use keywords to describe your specific skills or areas of interest. Keywords are not case sensitive. Searching by job titles is less effective because titles can vary from company to company. When typing in your keywords, you can either type in just one word or try these suggestions for using multiple words. Don't forget you can also continue to narrow your search on the next screen by typing another keyword in the blank field and then clicking on 'Subsearch'.
To specify words that must all appear in the search results, put 'and' between the words (e.g., "publishing and editor").
To specify words any of which may appear in the search results, put 'or' between the words (e.g., "publishing or editor").
To specify a word that must not appear in the search results, put 'and not' before the word (e.g. "publishing and not editor")
You can utilize an asterisk (*) as a wildcard character (e.g. "publish*" will return publish, publishing, publisher, etc.)
You can utilize parenthesis to separate keyword subsets (e.g. "(publishing or editor) and magazine")
Note: The search will not accept any characters that are not alphanumeric (e.g. "$"). Therefore, you may want to change the keywords in your search accordingly.

Submit, edit, and view (Top | Resume)
-
First, log in to My Monster. You will then see the option to either submit your resume, or to view, edit, or manage your resume.
Submit Resume – Fill in all the blanks on this page.
At the bottom there is a section for the resume body. You can copy and paste a pre-existing resume here, or type in a brand new one. When you are finished, you simply select the 'Submit this resume now!' button at the bottom, and your resume will be posted on our site.
View Resume - This screen allows you to see how your resume appears online to employers. If you would like to make any changes to your resume, return to the 'My Monster' menu and click on 'Edit Resume'.
Edit Resume - Make any changes to your resume you wish on this screen and click on 'Submit this resume now!' to update your changes online.
IMPORTANT: If you do not click on the 'Submit this resume now!' button, your changes will not be saved.
Confidential (Top | Resume)
-
In order to keep your resume confidential, leave the contact information blank. You must include at least one piece of contact information in order for an employer to contact you (we recommend email address). If you want employers to be able to find your resume, choose a Country/State. Do not include any contact information in the body of your resume. Instead of entering the name of your current employer, you may wish to enter the type of industry instead, when indicating your education, you may wish to enter the type of school rather than the specific name.
Copy and paste (Top | Resume)
-
Open your resume in a word processing program. Select the entire document except for your personal contact information. Go to the 'Edit' menu and select 'Copy' (common keyboard shortcut is ctrl-c or command-c). Then return to your browser. Place your cursor in the box marked 'Type or paste the body of your resume'. Go to the 'Edit' menu on your browser and select 'Paste' (common keyboard shortcut is ctrl-v or command-v, if you are using AOL this may be the only way to paste). Double check to verify all characters copied correctly. Remember to fill out your personal information at the top of the page.
Formatting (Top | Resume)
-
The Monster.com resume text editor is text-only (or HTML), uses a fixed-width font, and allows a maximum of 80 characters per line. The total limitation is 25,000 characters, enough room for about six pages of typed text.
The TAB function will not work in your posted resume. Use the SPACE BAR instead.
Substitute dashes or asterisks for bullets.
You can use HTML to format your resume. Keep in mind, the HTML code will be emailed to the employer when you apply for a job online.
Many word processor programs allow you to save as HTML. You must then copy and paste the HTML source code into the Monster.com resume entry box. If you are unfamiliar with HTML code, we suggest formatting your resume in plain text. We can not offer any assistance with HTML code.

We'll post your resume for you (Top | Resume)
-
If you would like us to post your resume for you, you will need to send your
resume along with $15.00 to the following address:
Online Resume Service
1713 Hemlock Lane
Plainfield, IN 46168
Make sure you include all of your contact information, especially your email
address, that way employers can contact you. We do not accept resumes any
other way. Once your resume is posted you will receive a confirmation card
stating when the resume was posted and what the expiration date is. When
your resume is posted through our Online Resume Service you will not have
access to view, edit or manage your resume nor will you be able to apply
online for positions with your resume. The purpose of this service is to
store your resume in our searchable resume database and be available to
employers and recruiters. If you would like to apply for a position with
Monster.com, please apply to the job posting as we do post our job openings
online as well.
Writing a resume that gets noticed (Top | Resume)
-
For tips on how to write an impressive resume, check out the information in our 'Zones'.
Manage Resume (Top | Resume)
-
The 'Manage Resume' screen allows you to have complete Control over the activity of your resume.
Date Expires - This is the date when your resume will no longer be searchable by potential employers or recruiters. An expired resume still remains in our database, and you can still send it to employers when applying online.
Resume Title - This heading shows up in the listing of resumes that recruiters see when searching our resume database. You create your resume title when you answer question #7 on the resume builder form.
View - This option shows you how your resume appears online to employers.
Extend – This option increases your chances of being found quickly by an employer. Resumes that have not been extended will appear farther down on an employer's search results page. For example, a resume that was originally submitted online six months ago but has been extended today will be accessed more quickly than a resume that was submitted two weeks ago but has never been extended.
You can extend your resume a maximum of one year from the current date.
If your resume has never been extended, it will automatically 'expire' after one year and will not be searchable by employers.
Expire – This option archives your resume on our system. Your expired resume will be taken offline so that employers are unable to search for it. However, an expired resume still remains in our database. You can still send it to the employers you choose by clicking the 'Apply online' option which appears at the bottom of a job description. Expiring your resume is a good option if you want to apply to a specific position without being contacted by other employers who have found your resume online. Keep in mind, when you edit your resume, it is automatically 'extended'. You will need to re-expire each time you edit.
If in the future you do want your resume to be searched by all employers, simply click on 'Extend' to make your resume appear online.
Delete – This option completely removes your resume from our system. If you would like to have a resume online in the future, you need to submit it again.
Notes:
- You cannot post more than one resume with the same email address.
- You cannot find out who has accessed you resume.
- Even if companies access your resume, it is normal for you to hear nothing from them.
Cover Letters (Top | My Monster)
-
This feature lets you send cover letters to prospective employers online. When you choose 'Apply online' from a job posting, you will have the option of sending one of the cover letters along with your resume. To begin creating your archive of letters, click on 'Add new letter'. The limit is 5 cover letters.
Enter the letter title:
Type in a title for this particular letter (for example, "Marketing letter- requesting interview.") The title of the letter will not be visible to an employer. This information is for your personal reference only. Giving each letter a different title will help you distinguish between them when you are applying online to a position.
Enter the letter content (plain text or formatted HTML):
Type or copy and paste the actual letter in the screen provided. An online cover letter has the same elements as a physical cover letter you would send in the mail.
Save Letter:
To add this letter to your archive, click on 'Save Letter'.
Make changes to an existing cover letter:
On the 'Cover Letters' screen, click on the title of the letter you wish to change. Make the appropriate changes and then click 'Save Letter'. Your updated letter has now been saved to the database.
Job Applications (Top | My Monster)
-
The Job Applications screen lists all the jobs to which you have applied through the 'Apply online' function. If a job you have applied for online does not appear here, the employer has taken that job off our database.
By clicking on the column titles you can sort your Applications by Date, Job Title or Company Name.
Change Password (Top | My Monster)
-
When your account was originally created, we provided you with a password. If you would like to change your password, enter a password of your choice in the 'New Password' box. Type this same password into the 'Verify New Password' box. You may also change your email address if you wish. Once you have made these changes, enter your old password into the next blank box and click on 'Save Changes'.
You will receive an email message from us asking you to confirm that you want these changes made to your account. Once you have confirmed these changes, you will be able to log in using your new username and password.

Frequently Asked Questions (Top)
-
Question: How much does this service cost?
Answer:
If you are a job seeker who wishes to post a resume and search the job listings, this service is free of charge. If you are wanting to post jobs, ads, or search our resume database, this is a chargeable service. Please email sales@monster.com or call 1-800-MONSTER for more information.
Question: How come I can't log in with the username and password that you sent me?
Answer: Make sure that you are entering the username and password exactly how it appears in the email. If you have a lower case 'L' in your email address then your username will most likely contain a lower case 'L' and not the number one '1'. If you have any doubts, please try both. The lower case 'I' also can be confused with the lower case 'J'. If your password contains what looks like a 'w' and it doesn't work, it may very likely be two lower case 'V's. Also, make sure that you are logging into 'My Monster' with your username and password. If you try and log into 'For Employers' you will get the message 'No such user account' because this is for employers only.
Question: I was told that my username and password would be emailed to me and I still haven't received an email. Why haven't you sent it?
Answer: Usernames and passwords get emailed to you within an hour of either creating a new account or filling out the 'Forgotten your username or password' form. Please check with your mail provider to make sure that your parental block or filters are disabled. If you are using AOL please make sure that you do not have Mail Controls or blocks set up preventing the receiving of external email (mail from non-AOL users). If you need help in either finding the Mail Controls or setting them up to receive all mail please contact AOL technical support.
Question: I've lost my username and password, but I've changed email addresses! What do I do?
Answer: Please send us a message. In the body of the message you must provide your previous email address, street address, city, state, country, postal code and phone number. Once we find and verify this information, we will change your account to your current email address, and send you your username and password.
Question: I am using AOL and for some reason I can't get my resume to paste into your resume box. Do I have to manually type it?
Answer: The bug you found is with the AOL browser. For some reason AOL's edit|paste is not mapped correctly. You can get around this bug by using the 'Paste' keyboard shortcut, ctrl-v (PC) or command-v (Mac). Please see our copy/paste help for more information.
Question: Several companies have accessed my resume, but I have heard nothing. Is this normal?
Answer: Yes, this does happen. We have several member companies who set up resume search agents, much like your job search agents. Then they look through all the resumes that are returned by the agent. To be more pro-active you can 'Apply Online' to most job postings by performing a job search.
Question: When I try to submit my resume I get a 'you did not fill out all the required fields' error message. What did I do?
Answer: Please keep in mind that #7 (title) and #8 (body) on the 'Edit Resume' or 'Submit Resume' screens are required. If you do not fill these out you will get an error message. We suggest filling out ALL fields, as the more information you give, the greater the chance of a better employer match.
Question: How can I find out who has accessed my resume?
Answer: We do not track who has seen your resume. Our subscribing employers have expressed their desire to remain anonymous, and we honor this request. The employers will contact you if your qualifications meet their needs.
Question: I cannot locate 'View Resume' or 'Edit Resume', where is it?
Answer: If you only notice the 'Submit Resume' option, then your resume was not saved. Please be sure you fill out #7 and #8, as they are required fields, and that you have clicked on the 'Submit this resume now' button at the bottom of the page. Then you will see the options to 'View Resume', 'Edit Resume', and to 'Manage Resume'.
Question: How can I post more than one resume?
Answer: You cannot post more than one resume with the same email address. This will affect the integrity of our resume database for our member companies, and for this reason we do not offer this option.
Question: I am unable to choose the correct Country/State from your pull down box. I am using Netscape 3.x with a Macintosh, how can I fix this?
Answer: This is a bug with Netscape 3.x for Macintosh. This bug was fixed in Netscape's newer software. You may want to upgrade to Netscape Communicator 4.51, available free from Netscape.
Question: I don't want to receive the Newsletter anymore. Can I unsubscribe?
Answer: Once you have logged into 'My Monster' you can select 'Free Newsletters'. You will then see a checkbox under the word 'Subscribe'. In order to unsubscribe, deselect the box and click on 'Save Changes'.
Question: How come I keep getting the error message 'parameter incorrect'?
Answer: Please check your preferences or options to be sure the language is set to English [en]. The problem lies in the current version of Microsoft Index Server. Microsoft has indicated that it should be fixed in the next release. In the mean time, please only use English [en] on our site.
Question: I enter my username and password, press 'Log me in!', and get looped back to a blank login screen. What is going on?
Answer: This problem only occurs with Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.x and 3.x (which is the built-in browser for AOL 4.0). This problem has been fixed in Microsoft's newer releases. We suggest upgrading to Microsoft Internet Explorer 5, available free from Microsoft.
Question: I am getting a lot of 404 errors, or other errors in loading. Can't you guys fix this?
Answer: We hate to pass the blame, but in most cases this is not a problem with our site! We have identified most 404 or other load errors as proxy server issues. You may want to contact your internet provider to have them refresh their proxy cache. You can also try adding '?nocache' to the end of most URL's (example: http://www.monster.com?nocache). AOL users: AOL utilizes a proxy server, you can bypass this problem in most cases by using either Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or Netscape Communicator 4.51.
Question: How come I keep getting the error message 'Closing Parenthesis', 'Expecting Phrase' or 'Ignored Words'?
Answer: These errors are related to keywords. If you are using keywords in your job search or agent search, make sure you are using them correctly (help). You may also be behind a firewall or proxy server that is misconfigured. There is a known bug that some proxy servers will truncate long URLs (such as our search result URLs). The latest versions of most proxy server software does not have this bug. Unfortunately, not all proxy server administrators have upgraded their servers. If you are not connecting to the internet from a company intranet with a firewall/proxy but rather through an ISP, you should contact your ISP and ask that they let you know how to get around the proxy.
Question: I keep getting the message 'Enable Cookies'. What do I do?
Answer: If you receive an error message having to do with Cookies, you will need to enable cookies in your browser (in your browsers preferences or options). If you have trouble finding this, please see your browsers documentation, or contact your internet provider's technical support. For more information on cookies, please visit Cookie Central.
Question: How come the expire date for my resume is set to yesterday?
Answer: Your resume has a maximum expiration date of one year from yesterday. You should see a '-00' after the date, short for the year 2000. For more information please see our 'Manage Resume' help.
