Q. As an interviewer or a recruiter, what are your thoughts when you see a candidate changing jobs every two years?

A. Good for them! If you asked me this question 10 years ago, it would have been an immediate red flag. Job-hopping would have told me that they’re disloyal and a bad investment – as soon as they were hired and money, time and energy were poured into their role, they were out the door.

Ask me now, however, and it’s a different tune. Seeing two years on a resume is a non-issue—compared to back in the day, two years at a company is the new 10 years. My thoughts now involve the job itself – why are they leaving and what did they accomplish during that timeframe?

It makes sense: According to Mercer data, the average salary increase this year will be 2.9%. That’s worth repeating: 2.9%! One of the best ways you’re going to significantly boost your salary involves landing an external opportunity.
