We did some data magic to find the cities with the best combination of low cost of living and high availability of customer service positions.

Hey Talia Jane, here’s why you should give up San Francisco for Knoxville

Dear Talia,

How's it going? Wait, scratch that...

By this point, most of America has heard about what’s going on with you: How you wrote a post about being unable to afford rent on your low customer service salary, how your company fired you shortly thereafter, and how the whole story has since gone completely viral.

While we know your approach has garnered some mixed reviews, we empathize with the fact that the cost of living in cities like San Francisco, where you’re based, is out of control—and we recognize that it can put people who earn minimum wage (or close to it) in a tough bind. According to Salary.com, the median customer service pay is $16 an hour or less.

That doesn't go far in a city like San Francisco. But in a cheaper city, you might not be faced with blowing the majority of your paycheck on rent.

"There a number of up-and-coming mid-sized cities in the midwest and across the upper south," said Peter Goldey, co-founder and director of data services and analytics at Onboard Informatics, a New York City-based data provider. "Away from the high-cost big coastal cities and media centers, there's an appeal to millennials with solid job markets, new technology centers and lower living costs."

We at Monster decided to help you figure out where you'd have the best shot at getting a customer service job while also being able to pay your rent...and occasionally manage buy a better-than-you-drank-in-college beer once in a while. So we combined data from Onboard on city affordability with Monster job data to identify the 10 cities that had the best combination of available customer service representative (CSR) jobs and mercifully low cost of living. Take a look—the relocation fees might be worth it.

Beer's on you next time.
