Student Athlete Resume Sample

Looking for resume-writing tips? We can coach you through the process of writing a student athlete resume for your college application. Whether you’ll try out for a team once you’re a student, are a preferred walk-on, or have been recruited, you’ll still need to submit a solid college application that may include a resume.

If including a resume is optional, submit one if you think the information on it will benefit your application. A college resume for an athlete should include a summary of your previous athletic experience and related activities, such as coaching, mentorships, and volunteering. This information can go in a traditional resume format or on an activities resume like the sample below, which details extracurricular activities rather than academic achievements.

Your resume can include both your athletic credentials and how your athletic experience has contributed to your development in other areas, such as:

  • Leadership experience, for example as a team captain, demonstrates work ethic and your ability to inspire and motivate your team members.
  • Administrative tasks can indicate organizational and academic skills.
  • Experience organizing events can demonstrate team building, event management, and leadership skills.
  • Volunteer activities, such as mentoring, can boost your resume because they speak to your personal characteristics, values, and ethics.
