Environmental Careers Overview

Environmental Careers Overview

If you have an interest in the natural sciences and are concerned about protecting the environment as well as the health of human beings, you'd do well in environmental careers. Environmental scientists and specialists use their training and knowledge to collect and analyze data and samples, develop strategies to deal with and prevent environmental problems, provide information to the public and prepare reports on their research and findings.

Environmental Careers Education

Careers in environmental specialties require at least a bachelor's degree in natural science or a related field, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). If you are ambitious, though, and want to advance, you'll need a master's degree. In addition to the educational credentials, employers will look for key qualities such as good analytical skills, problem-solving, self-discipline, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Environmental Careers Job Market

Increasing governmental regulations are the cause for the rosy job outlook for environmental jobs. While the average growth of all occupations is expected to be 11 percent, companies' increasing need for specialists to advise them and help them meet standards and regulations should help environmental careers increase 15 percent over the next 10 years. According to the BLS, that will be 103,200 jobs by 2022, up from 90,000 environmental jobs in 2012.

Environmental Careers Salaries

Environmental careers pay well, especially those with the federal government. The average income there is $95,460 annually. On the whole, though, the median yearly wage for all types of environmental careers is $63,570. Expect to earn your keep regardless of where you work. Most environmental jobs are full-time and some require working irregular hours, and long ones at that, when working in the field.
