Government Careers Overview

Government Careers Overview

If you're interested in government careers, you have a wide variety of jobs to choose from. Typically you may think of politicians when you consider government jobs, but the government needs people with a range of talents and skills to keep it going. Positions from janitors on up to the president and everything in between are types of government jobs. Many government agencies require clerical help, and often need people with social work or legal backgrounds.

Government Education

The type of education you'll need for government jobs depends on which job you have your sights set on. Entry-level positions such as maintenance and janitorial don't even require a high school diploma, while administrator and political government jobs involve degrees. The government breaks down jobs into a coding system that lists government careers by level of education, starting with GS-1, which requires no high school diploma, and going up to GS-11 which requires a Ph.D. or the equivalent doctorate or advanced law degree, according to a report by the BLS.

Government Job Market

The outlook for government careers is as varied as the individual positions the government employs. Overall, however, even during times of recession and cutbacks, the government will still employ people to continue running as smoothly as possible. Job seekers of all educational and skill levels can find and apply for government jobs online, narrowing down the possibilities by searching for jobs that match their skills and background, and ones located locally.

Government Salaries

Because government jobs are so varied, the salaries are, too. Also, just like the jobs are broken down on a scale, the government pays out salaries based on a pay table that classifies jobs as "grades" and the salary levels as "steps." GS-1 positions that don't even require a high school diploma may average only $17,803 annually, according to the 2013 salary table published on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) website. The further up the general schedule and salary table you go, though, the more education and experience you'll be expected to have, and that translates to higher wages. The OPM lists the grade 15 step 10 annual salary to be $129,517.
