Peoria, Illinois, has a highly advanced medical community that makes up 25 percent of the citys economy. One real estate developer touts this friendly, mid-sized city as the new American dream, writing that any average kid walking out of college with the average student loan debt can buy a home in Peoria, IL for less than what they paid for college. Thats incentive for the graduates of Peorias Bradley University and several other colleges to stay put after graduation.

The population is young, with a median age of 34 years. These youngsters were clearly raised well, as Peoria has long had a firm grip on one etiquette experts list of Top 10 Best-Mannered Cities. Kids here are well-educated as well as polite. Peorias Dunlap School District ranks #12 of 408 for Best School Districts in Illinois.

With a team devoted to restoration of historical buildings and community conscious development, the city government attracts residents interested in urban renewal. When theyre not busy renovating their houses, Peorians are busy living it up.

Peoria is the largest city on the Illinois river. Its scenic RiverFront district is alive with great restaurants, live entertainment, museums, and a farmers market that look out upon passing barges and pleasure boats, including the paddleboat Spirit of Peoria. Patrons can cook their own steaks over the open flame of an outdoor pit at Alexanders Steakhouse.

They might then stroll over to Obed & Issacs Microbrewery, located inside a restored 1889 church with lovely stained glass windows, for handmade craft beers and ciders. Or they may drive out to one of the areas three wineries: Mackinaw Valley Winery, Kickapoo Creek Winery, and Willetts Winery and Cellar.

There is plenty of space to stay active with the citys 9,000+ acres of parks that include the Peoria Zoo, Luthy Botanical Garden, and five public golf courses.

And there is plenty of opportunity to be active with other people. Participants of the annual Steamboat Classic may choose from among three running events separately billed as the Worlds Fastest 4 Miles, Peorias Easiest 4K, and Illinoiss Toughest 15K.

Peoria celebrates autumn at the Pumpkin Festival in nearby Morton, where Libbys processes more than 80 percent of the worlds canned pumpkin. Winter weather ushers in the East Peoria Festival of Lights and the Folepis Winter Wonderland, a drive-through display that is among one of the largest in the country. The Santa Claus Parade winds through the city with 90 floats and a horde of costumed characters.

Traffic is light here, and Chicago and St. Louis are both only about 2 hours away.
