Scope of Position: Reporting to the Mass General Chief of Anesthesia, the Brigham Health Chair of Anesthesia, and the iCare Chief Medical Officer, the Anesthesia Medical Director is responsible for the overall clinical operations of anesthesia services across multiple iCare ambulatory surgery sites, initially also serving as the Site Chief of Anesthesia at the Salem, NH iCare site.

*Please note reporting structure and responsibilities of role may evolve with time. At the start, this full-time position is conceived to be 40% effort (i.e. two days per week) performing the MGB iCare responsibilities described above, with the remaining 60% effort (i.e. three days per week) performing clinical anesthesia work at an MGB location. Over time the position will be 100% at iCare ASC sites.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Partner with leaders of the relevant surgical and nursing services to develop and carry out appropriate plans for the provision of excellent, high quality anesthesia services at iCare ASCs.

Build and strengthen existing collaborative relationships with both internal and external constituents (surgeons, nurses, and other allied health professionals)

Lead and represent site in the broader MGB iCare initiatives; actively support the mission and initiatives of MGB iCare, including strategic development, growth and implementation of new clinical programs.

Recruit staff anesthesiologists and CRNAs for Salem, NH and future sites in New England. Recruit Anesthesia Site Chiefs for iCare locations as needed.


In consultation with MGB iCare Leadership Committee, specific responsibilities will include:

Administrative/General Oversight

Collaborate closely with key stakeholders and members of the leadership team on issues related to the site.

Participate (or assure that other members of the site participate) in all relevant departmental, hospital and system-wide committees.

Lead strategic planning process and growth initiatives for iCare surgery site and participate in program development for MGB iCare as requested.

Communicate regularly with site, departmental, and MGB iCare leadership.

Maintain the highest levels of quality clinical care and patient satisfaction.

Serve as leader for any cross-site surgical governance, as well as Salem site governance efforts for clinical operations improvement and/or quality and safety.

Ensure that all staff members and clinical operations comply with MGH, CMS and Joint Commission guidelines and policies.

Provide opportunities for professional development of staff members.

Ensure appropriate and effective communication, collaboration between physicians, CRNAs and other clinical staff and non-clinical staff in the Department to support optimal interdisciplinary patient care.

Create and maintain harmonious and effective work units - one that fosters communication, teamwork, cooperation, flexibility, respect, good morale, safety, and diversity. Demonstrate professional behavior and engage in an effective, collaborative and congenial manner with other departmental and institutional members as part of a multidisciplinary team of caregivers.

Clinical Oversight

Provide oversight of all clinical care provided within site, assuring that expert level clinical care is provided to all patients and that practice meets system and national accepted standards of care and regulatory guidelines, as well as high ethical standards.

Oversee clinical assignments of Salem, NH site staff members and any certified registered nurse anesthetists assigned to the site, including daily deployment of all clinical personnel to ensure appropriate and efficient coverage.

Assure that the operating rooms work efficiently without undue anesthesia related delays or cancellations by working closely with other members of patient care teams.

Cross-train and orient anesthesiologists from other sites to allow them to maintain skill sets relevant to the practice of anesthesiology, if needed

Participate in the provision of quality, evidence-based care, including regular review of any quality assurance reports originating within site. Serve as a resource for Physician Leaders to discuss clinical issues, standards of care, utilization, etc.

Fully comply with all billing, departmental, institutional and external regulatory policies.

Financial Oversight

Responsible for the financial performance of iCare anesthesia services - specifically, anesthesia-related clinical revenues and expenses. Includes collaborating with the business office to oversee and offer clinical expertise regarding billing practices within the site, to contain costs and in revenue improvement efforts.

Participate in the annual capital budget process, ensuring that anesthesia capital requests are reasonable and properly represent clinical needs.

Personnel Oversight

Lead by example and serve as a role model and mentor for site members; motivates team to perform at their best.

In consultation with the leadership team, the Medical Director / Salem Site Chief will make recommendations regarding remedial actions related to substandard performance in clinical care, teaching, and/or professionalism of all members of the site.

Hold regular staff meetings with site members and employs superb communication skills.

Participate in hiring, termination of employment, and all other decisions related to staff members within the site.

Work in direct collaboration with the leadership team to regularly assess and optimize staffing levels.


Professional Qualifications:

Licensure in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Board certified or eligible in Anesthesiology.

Exceptional clinical judgment and performance

Experience working in community-based settings preferred.
