Overview:

As the American Public Health Association approaches its’ 150th Anniversary, we are seeking a part-time archivist to perform a wide variety of tasks associated with this important milestone. The archivist will serve as the Association’s point of contact, to both members and staff, on all research projects.  The individual must work a minimum of 21 hours a week.   Individual may select to be a contract employee only (does not include APHA benefits) or an employee which includes APHA benefits.   Contract is for two years with the possibility of continuation based on funding and performance.   Please post in your cover letter if applying under “Contractor†or “Employee†and provide salary requirements.

Responsibilities:

The archivist will oversee the preservation, arrangement, description, and access to born-digital materials.   This individual will assist staff, researchers, and interns interested in accessing the Archives, appraise the materials, determine preservation and conservation issues, and determine best practice for resolving issues.   Additionally, the archivist will facilitate the acquisition of key Association documents and memorabilia.   The archivist will maintain and update the Association’s archival database.  The archivist will serve as the Association’s historian, presenting to internal and external constituencies, as needed and perform other duties as assigned.   Skill in the use of computer with Windows-based operating environment.   Ability to develop and maintain finding aids using contemporary tools in accordance with national standards.   Knowledge of archival and preservation concepts, methodology, and techniques.   Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.   Substantial knowledge of research methodology and skill in providing research assistance.   Knowledge of archival ethics and laws relating to archival management.   Knowledge of the historical contexts governing archival operations.   Knowledge of basic skills in web application software or markup language such as XML or other contemporary tools.   Ability to make evaluative judgments.   Knowledge of automated storage and retrieval systems, electronic records, and electronic publications.   Skill in searching and maintaining online and other electronic retrieval systems.   Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.   Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.   Knowledge of available sources of archival materials.   Ability to assess objectives and operational requirements and to develop and implement suitable operational policies and/or procedures.   Ability to identify and secure alternative funding through grants and other revenue sources.

 

 

Qualifications:

Minimum of 3 years of archival experience desired.   B.A. or advanced degree in library science and/or related field; Special library experience a plus.   Knowledge of best practices and archival standards.   Experience in archival digitization technologies and digital asset management.   Detail oriented, team player, able to juggle multiple tasks, shifting priorities in a fast-paced work environment, and excellent customer service.   Physical Demands: The duties of this job include sitting, standing, bent over, kneeling, and lifting or moving objects up to 40lbs.

 

Position is based in downtown DC near several metro stations.   Hours: 21 hours a week, part-time (daytime).   Number of openings: 1.
