Associate General Counsel will provide legal guidance and support to the Company on regulatory and compliance related matters, including, but not limited to federal and state fraud and abuse laws and other health care regulatory laws as such matters arise in the context of healthcare provider businesses. The attorney's primary focus will be supporting the Company’s OptumCare delivery businesses in the West region. This position requires experience in the Federal healthcare regulatory laws, including the False Claims Act, the Federal Physician Self-Referral Law (“Stark Law”), the Anti-Kickback Statute, the Civil Monetary Penalties and Beneficiary Inducement laws and their implementing regulations. This attorney should also have experience in contract drafting and negotiation, including  joint venture arrangements and M&A transactions.

Associate General Counsel will serve as legal regulatory counsel and a strategic partner, with an emphasis on healthcare laws and regulations, will assist other Optum attorneys, compliance teammates, and business clients in identifying and resolving legal/regulatory matters. Advise on compliance with federal and state healthcare industry laws and regulations. Monitor changes in relevant regulatory and reimbursement areas, and provide education and legal counsel to clients and teammates on those changes.

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree with 7+ years of legal practice in the healthcare industry
  • Legal experience within healthcare industry, either in house or with a law firm
  • At least 1 State Bar Admission and in good standing
  • Expertise in transactional healthcare matters
  • Substantial knowledge of health care fraud and abuse laws and regulations
  • Solid research and analytical skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel
  • If you need to enter a work site for any reason, you will be required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener. When in a UnitedHealth Group building, employees are required to wear a mask in common areas. In addition, employees must comply with any state and local masking orders
