The Job

San Bernardino County Land Use Services is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to serve as a Building and Safety Technician.* Building Services Technicians play a key role in processing various planning, building, and development-related applications to ensure compliance with county regulations.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Provide direct customer service at the public counter, over the phone, online, and via email by assisting applicants, contractors, and the public with permit requirements, application procedures, project status inquiries, and departmental processes.
  • Review residential building permit applications, site plans, and supporting documentation for compliance with County standards, zoning regulations, and site development constraints.
  • Process permit applications from intake through issuance, including verifying application completeness, applying permit conditions, collecting applicable fees, and coordinating with internal departments and outside agencies.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with applicable County regulations, policies, and procedures while supporting efficient permit processing operations.

Positions exist in the Planning and Building and Safety divisions. The resulting eligible list may be used to fill vacancies throughout Land Use Services as they occur. Immediate vacancies exist in the city of San Bernardino, the Desert region, and the Mountain region.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must undergo a background check, which includes fingerprinting and a medical exam.

Work Schedule: Candidates must be available to work weekends and holidays, as required.

Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required and employees will be required to make provisions for such transportation. Employees must be able to work in varied terrains throughout the County, including mountain and desert regions.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must meet ONE (1) of the Experience Options below to qualify.

EXPERIENCE OPTION 1:One (1) year of full-time equivalent experience processing permit applications for, or enforcing, code compliance related to land use, building, construction, fire, environmental, or other code regulations, which includes explaining related regulations and requirements to the public.

EXPERIENCE OPTION 2:Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience providing public information and/or performing investigations, inspections, or fieldwork related to planning, land use, code enforcement, or a closely related field.

Desired Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess strong customer service and organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask effectively. Candidates must be able to work in varied terrains throughout the County, including mountain and desert regions.
