The Appellate Courts of the Alaska Court System (ACS) invite applications for a Court Case Manager 2 (salary range 12).  The selected applicant will exercise excellent customer service and teamwork skills to produce a professional work product, processes and appropriately routes documents filed in the appellate courts, ensures cases move along the prescribed path, and distributes court decisions on motions and cases.  The following are currently assigned duties. These may be reassigned within the division based on business requirements.
 
  

 
  • Open new appeals, set up paper files, determine next steps; prepare and distribute opening notices, notify trial court case managers and judges of pending appeals; set up due dates, issue other notices as needed; enter all opening dates in computer and set appropriate follow-up tasks;
  • Evaluate motions to determine if they are routine, individual justice/judge, or full-court, and how and to whom they should be routed; decide routine motions and compose, sign, and set appropriate follow-up tasks; copy, scan, email, and distribute documents as appropriate;
  • Analyze and assign individual justice/judge and full-court motions; compose assignment memos summarizing the current status of the case, the relief requested in the motion, whether the motion is opposed, and other pertinent facts;
  • Receive notices of completion of trial court file preparation and receipt of transcripts, process records and transcripts, calculate brief due dates, prepare and distribute notices to parties;
  • Receive and route petitions/memoranda and responses; compose, sign, and distribute orders on petitions for review, petitions for hearing, original applications, Bar matters, and other items; enter data and set appropriate follow-up tasks;
  • File paperwork; respond to procedural questions in person, by phone, letter, and/or e-mail from parties, attorneys, court staff, and the general public concerning all aspects of filing appeals, petitions, motions, and briefs; accommodate requests to view current or archived files; 
  • Contact case parties prior to oral arguments; retrieve files, records, and pertinent documents for the court; on the day of oral argument, prepare courtroom, open elevators, accommodate parties and media, enter orders directed by the court; act as in-court clerk by gaveling in the court, operating recorder and timer, and keeping track of attorneys' time;
  • Review written opinions and orders for accuracy; prepare opinions for distribution; maintain strict confidentiality of opinions until date of issuance; contact parties and trial court judges at specified times on the morning of issuance;
  • Cover front counter duties one day per week, more often depending on staffing; unlock and lock doors, reconcile cash drawer; assist customers at front counter and answer main phone;
  • Assist in training new case managers, including periodic shifts spent sitting with new case managers for training; other duties as assigned.
 
An ideal applicant will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.  Please detail these in the required cover letter.
 
  • Experience working in data entry.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience processing detail-oriented documents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, including excellent grammar and spelling.

The Work Hours
Full-time court employees are currently scheduled to work 37.5 hours per week.  The work hours for this position are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break.

Personal leave accrual is based on years of creditable state service. Those new to state service will accrue 4 weeks of paid leave (with cash value) over the course of their first year of service. That accrual rate will increase after 2 years of service.
