Job Summary

The Sustainability, Director is a senior level position responsible for providing the vision, organizational strategy and focus for advancing operational sustainability efforts at  University.  This position provides senior administrators, staff, faculty, and students with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to integrate sustainability values and practices into: strategic planning processes, operations and resource management, and overall University practices.  Working directly with the Senior Director of Campus Planning, Architecture, & Sustainability, this position is the primary representative on the implementation of the Physical Facilities Sustainability Master Plan, sustainability rating systems (i.e. AASHE STARS), green construction best management practices, and green building rating systems (i.e. LEED).  Provides expertise to the Sustainability Committee (SUSCOM) and other sustainability committees / groups on campus.  Manages implementation of a wide array of sustainability projects/initiatives on campus.  Point person for sustainability engagement activities including Farmers Market, Tailgate Recycling Team, Green Week, and Earth Week.

 

Required:

  • Bachelors degree, preferably in sustainability, environmental management, environmental science, architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, or related field 

  • Eight or more years of experience in a field related to sustainability or environmental management

  • Previous experience working in a highly decentralized environment, preferably higher education

  • Experience leading and managing initiatives in support of the implementation of short- and long- term strategic goals within a complex, matrixed organization

  • Proven track record in implementing sustainability best practices

  • Subject matter expert in green building rating systems (specifically LEED-BD+C)

  • Experience with demand-side management, renewable and emerging technologies, energy policy, and occupant engagement

  • Mastery of developing the business case / value proposition for sustainability

  • Expert knowledge of sustainability theories, practices and programs

  • Experience leading the development and implementation of operational initiatives and policies

  • Participation in appropriate professional organizations, preferably in a leadership position

  • Experience in mentoring staff and developing an organization from within

  • Expert in change management and mitigating obstacles to success

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects of varying size and complexity, ability to modify or adjust priorities, experience in working with and encouraging participation from a diverse spectrum of people

  • Excellent interpersonal, political, communication skills and project management skills

  • Computer mastery of Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Excellent writing capabilities

  • Ability to: 

    • Develop, implement, and adjust action plans for implementation of priority initiatives

    • Address problems and issues which are difficult, numerous and undefined, requiring extensive investigation to understand the root cause

    • Leverage impact across multiple departments, specialties, and disciplines

    • Improve upon entire processes or systems using significant conceptualization, reasoning, and interpretation skills

    • Leverage available resources to maximize impact on campus

    • Think critically, synthesize complex data, draw conclusions, and make strategic recommendations

    • Work with individuals from different viewpoints and backgrounds

    • Recognize and evaluate problem situations and recommend corrective action

 

Preferred:

  • Masters degree 

  • LEED AP 

  • Experience working with and mentoring students
