THE ROLE

Storytelling is at the heart of Sotheby’s, and the Editor in Chief (EIC) is Sotheby’s lead storyteller. Finding inspiration in the stories that emerge through our marketplaces, events and community, the EIC will define a global editorial program that comes to life across a broad media ecosystem: Sothebys.com, the Sotheby’s app, newsletters, market reports, and a quarterly print magazine. The content created under the EIC’s supervision will reinforce the company’s longstanding position at the pinnacle of art, luxury and commerce; enhance the impact of the company’s marquee auctions and events; support new business initiatives; and attract new customers.

The EIC will collaborate closely with the marketing, communications, social media and video production teams, and will lead a talented internal team of editors, writers and digital producers. The EIC must be able to produce original content, and will also build and maintain a first-rate stable of external contributors.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience leading content teams, with a record of driving business results.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategy and Planning

Collaborate with senior colleagues to identify current business goals that can be supported through editorial content, including:
Audience development
Consignment pipeline
Retail customer acquisition
VIP client engagement
Partnerships
New business initiatives
Create an editorial plan for Sothebys.com, Sotheby’s magazine, and other editorial channels, including newsletters
Identify resources needed and revenue opportunities
Build P&L
Implementing the Editorial Program

Supervise editorial and web site production teams
Bring new writers and voices into Sotheby’s
Supervise external vendors
Lead internal meetings and presentations
Measuring success

Create and present regular reports measuring progress against goals
 
IDEAL EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES

At least 8-10 years experience in a senior position focus on digital content creation and distribution
Deep understanding of the art and luxury markets and the key players and forces that shape it
Excellent writing and editorial skills across various media channels
A creative and strategic mindset
Superior communication skills and the ability to interact with a broad range of senior colleagues
The leadership qualities necessary to manage and inspire editorial and production teams
Goals oriented, with the ability to meet tight deadlines and the drive to achieve specific business goals
Self-starter who takes responsibility and knows how to problem solve
