Cleveland-Cliffs is the largest flat-rolled steel company and the largest iron ore pellet producer in North America. The company is vertically integrated from mining through iron making, steelmaking, rolling, finishing and downstream with hot and cold stamping of steel parts and components.

As a quality design engineer, you will develop and implement product chemistry and manufacturing recipes necessary to satisfy customer specifications, especially API.  This position is in the quality assurance department in the Plate division located at the Burns Harbor, Indiana location.

  • Develops and implements product chemistry and manufacturing recipes necessary to satisfy customer specifications, especially API
  • Analyzes and improves product capability
  • Assists and leads resolution of claims, technical issues, and major quality concerns
  • Reviews mill's quality performance and assists in the continuous improvement projects and corrective Reviews prior days production to verify slabs are appropriately graded based on process variables by the Slab Quality Model
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Material Science or Metallurgical Engineering or equivalent related experience
  • 3 years of experience on hot rolling / plate processing
  • Working knowledge of plate metallurgical principals
  • Working knowledge of plate products and customer specifications, especially API
  • Working knowledge of steel defects and their origins
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be familiar with the Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access)
  • Must be able to work in a multi-level organization which operates 24/7 and work extended hours as needed
Preferred Requirements:
  • Five years of experience in hot rolling / plate experience
