POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Field Engineering Aide/Permit Officer performs routine and responsible paraprofessional work in the provision of engineering services in the City, as well as other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general direction of the DPW Commissioner, City Engineer and close supervision of the Assistant City Engineers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. - Provides supportive administrative and paraprofessional services for various projects related to the construction and/or maintenance of civil infrastructure, including but not limited to drainage, roadways, stormwater, water, and wastewater.
- Tracks materials and general construction information; crosschecks against invoices and contracts with various vendors and coordinating partners.
- Relays important construction and engineering work information to relevant Engineering Division personnel.
- Cross-collaborates with Department of Public Works (DPW) personnel to plan and track projects in order to prevent or minimize the disruption of critical services and civil infrastructure.
- Maintains relevant records and processes permits, including Dig Safe mark outs and mark out requests, trench permits, public rights of way permits; works closely with clerical and administrative personnel to ensure accurate data and record retention.
- May assist in the inspection of work done by utility companies, contractors, developers, and subcontractors.
- Performs other related job duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any equivalent combination of the below-listed education, training, certification, and experience is qualifying.

- Associate degree with 1 to 3 years’ experience in the industry.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field with 1 year of related experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of relevant Massachusetts General Laws related to essential functions, engineering and construction inspection techniques and practices.
- Strong communication and organizational, problem solving and customer service skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with GPS/GIS equipment and programs; experience with AutoCAD a plus.
- Ability to multi-task and manage conflict; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; maintain good public relations and to maintain effective collaborative working relationships with City departments, department heads, fellow employees, officials and the general public and to respond in a courteous and professional manner; meet deadlines; work independently and make responsible decisions.
