This position involves hands-on labor in a scrap metal yard, including unloading pallets, boxes, and bundles, and performing material handling tasks such as pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying materials to fill hoppers and conveyor belts.
Responsibilities include unpacking boxes, separating packaging materials, disassembling small equipment, cutting wires, and removing bolts and parts from automobiles and appliances. The role also requires operating recycling equipment like metal shears, band saws, and wire strippers.
Additional duties encompass yard vehicle traffic control, light facility maintenance (painting, moving furniture), machinery repair assistance, housekeeping (cleaning, sweeping, debris removal), landscaping, and organizational tasks to optimize space utilization.
Employees must maintain a clean and safe work environment, dispose of waste properly, and ensure work area cleanup at shift end. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential.
Qualifications include passing medical, drug, and background checks; a high school diploma or GED is preferred. Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are a plus. Candidates should communicate effectively, understand instructions, and use basic math. Willingness to learn sorting metals, maintaining equipment, and using PPE is required.
Work is outdoors in a scrap yard, demanding moderate to heavy physical effort, with sensory engagement in hearing, vision, smell, touch, and taste. Equipment used includes yard tools and PPE, with safety and environmental compliance mandatory.
