Position Summary

Rice University's Fondren Library is seeking a highly motivated, collaborative and service-oriented government information librarian. S/he will provide service through the Kelley Center for Government Information, Data, and Geospatial Services, which is located in the Fondren Library. Fondren Library is a Federal Depository Library (FDL) and a Patents and Trademark Research Center (PTRC). The successful candidate will be trained to serve as a PTRC Representative. The government information librarian will also have these responsibilities: staffing the Kelley Center reference desk, providing reference assistance and research consultancy, teaching workshops, processing the Kelley Center's collections, and conducting department outreach and promotion. This position will report to the government information coordinator.

Essential Functions

  • Serves as PTRC representative (i.e., serves as the primary contact person, trainer at Fondren Library for all patents and trademark requests, and performs all required duties of the representative)
  • Keeps developing knowledge about all Kelley Center collections and resources
  • Participates in providing reference assistance and research consultancy; develops, teaches, and evaluates training workshops; leads Kelley Center tours
  • Works with the Cataloging Department on copy cataloging and maintaining serial holdings and bibliographic control of Kelley Center collections (e.g., FDLP, PTRC, Fondren's flat map collection, microforms) in all formats; assist processing staff with checking in and maintaining Kelley Center's collections; provides relevant user and staff training as needed.
  • Participates in planning, designing, implementing, assessing regular departmental promotion and outreach activities, such as events, displays, social media posts, newsletter articles, etc., to increase the awareness and the usage of Kelley Center collections, resources, equipment, and unique services
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Additional Functions/Information
  • This position may be assigned to supervise student staff and volunteers.

Required Qualifications
  • ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science
  • Three (3) years professional library work experience
  • Demonstrated broad knowledge of or strong interest in learning about and promoting patent, trademark and other government information resources
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a wide variety of people
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant aspects of library operations including contemporary library practices, trends and emerging technologies
  • Demonstrated broad knowledge of library discovery environments, office automation software, and online resources
  • Ability to stay current with new digital library and information tools and resources to provide services
  • Effective problem solving, analytical, organizational and collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • A second Master's degree in Engineering, Science, Entrepreneurship, or Business
  • Professional public service experience in an academic research university library environment, especially in a PTC and/or a FDL
  • Professional experience with copy cataloging and bibliographic control of library records for any or all of these materials: FDLP, PTRC, maps, and microform materials
  • Strong project management and event management skills, including initiating, planning, designing, and implementing promotion and outreach activities
  • Experience with supervising or providing training to student workers and volunteers
  • Strong ability to use computer and telecommunications technologies for information management and collaboration
  • Ability to use library technology such as the Alma and Springshare platform (LibGuides & LibAnswers), on site and virtual teaching technology
  • Ability to apply new technologies to effectively manage promotion and outreach, e.g. social media, blogs, website development, promotional materials design and editing software like Adobe products
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft office suite, particularly Excel
