The ITS Construction Inspector monitor the work of contractors to ensure quality control and contract compliance for traffic signals, ITS, roadway, signs, pavement markings, intersection improvements construction/maintenance projects of minimal to moderate complexity, under the direction of a Construction Manager or designee. Assist on projects of moderate to high complexity under the direction of a Construction Inspector Senior and/or Construction Manager. The Inspector will compute daily pay quantities and prepare field adjustment estimates, inform project management of issues that arise in the field and assist in resolution as directed and contribute feedback to Project Inspector for evaluations for all prime contractors and agreed-upon subcontractors. 

This role includes frequent daily travel, as this contract spans the VDOT Bristol, Salem and Lynchburg Districts in Virginia. Candidates must be able and willing to travel (company vehicle and fuel will be provided) throughout these areas in order to be considered.  

The ITS Construction Inspector shall have a working knowledge of:

  • Familiarity with Intelligent Transportation Systems, signals, dynamic message signs, electronics, and installation of conduit and junction boxes for VDOT traffic systems.
  • Roadway, structure, and bridge construction / maintenance / repair / rehabilitation methods, materials, standards and specifications
  • Most recent editions of VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications (including Supplemental Specifications), Road and Bridge Standards, Construction Manual, Inspector Manual, Virginia Supplement to the Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual, and any references incorporated therein
  • Construction plans, symbols, and terminology
  • State and federal environmental, and safety guidelines and regulations
  • Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months of employment and maintain

Additional Qualifications:

  • Communicates effective, both orally and in writing
  • Reads and interprets roadway, structure and bridge plans and specifications
  • Applies mathematical formulas and equations to calculate distances, areas, and volumes
  • Identifies and makes appropriate field adjustments; refers engineering changes for appropriate review and action
  • Prepares correspondence to communicate with agency and contractor personnel
  • Maintains detailed records
  • Performs and documents required materials testing
  • Communicates with the agency and contractor personnel
