Laboratory Materials Engineer (Specialty in Ferrous & Non-Ferrous Metallurgy)

 

Major Job Responsibilities

Required

  • Conducts problem solving, and provides laboratory analytical support on materials and processes for manufacturing, engineering, and customers to resolve and prevent problems
  • Apply knowledge of material science and metallurgy to recommend engineering and process changes to attain design goals and specifications.
  • Perform materials analysis and investigations, operate non-routine / advanced analytical equipment, and generate reports
  • Prepare and maintain material laboratory procedures
  • Designs / builds test fixtures, and conducts tests for materials mechanical property characterization
  • Collaborates with product & process teams to maximize cost effectiveness of materials and their applications
  • Procures samples for test set up and materials test programs
  • Sets up and operates test devices and measurement tools
  • Gathers and analyzes data, and writes related reports and procedures as required
  • Maintains assigned equipment calibrations, and laboratory operating and test procedures per quality system requirements
  • Frequently exchanges information with others outside the work group
  • Maintains safety protocols, adheres to lab chemical hygiene plan & chemical handling, and good housekeeping standards
  • Knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous materials (steel, cast iron, aluminum, powdered metal, stainless steel, etc.) and their characteristics
  • Basic knowledge of heat treat processes
  • Understanding of materials related to engineering theory and principles of design
  • Analytical ability where problems are somewhat complex
  • Ability to make sketches and perform common computations
  • Familiarity with basic hand tools and sample preparation equipment
  • Ability to use common measurement tools and techniques
  • Great oral and written communication skills
  • Great interpersonal skills to work effectively with others
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Ability to use technologies related to processing tests and interpreting data

 

Preferred:

  • Knowledge / experience in conducting testing, and analyzing results on inorganic materials from:
  • Metallography
  • Chemical analysis (OES, XRF, EDX, etc.)
  • Experience with heat treat processes and characteristics, such as induction hardening, carburizing, carbonitriding, annealing, etc.
  • Mechanical testing including tensile, hardness, impact, etc.
  • Basic understanding / knowledge of non-destructive testing methodologies 
  • Knowledge / experience in failure analysis, material failure characteristics, fracture morphology, and failure mechanisms
  • Experience with scanning electron microscopy
  • Training in problem-solving methodologies
  • Knowledge or awareness of quality systems, including IATF 16949, ISO 9001 & ISO 17025

 

Educational Requirements (Required)

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgy, or Mechanical Engineering
  • Proficiency in computer applications (MS Word, Excel, Access, etc.)
