SUMMARY

Extended Day Activity Instructors are responsible for leading afterschool programming for children and teens at New York Edge after-school program sites. The activity instructor will teach or co-lead activities in one of the following areas: STEM, visual art, performing art, literacy, student leadership and character development, sports, health and wellness, business, finance and entrepreneurship, math, media arts, journalism, botany, and urban agriculture, history. The activity instructor is a dual reporting role, supporting the curriculum and instruction department team by designing lesson plans and implementing curricula across New York Edge program sites. They will also support the program director by preparing activity materials and explaining principles, techniques, and safety procedures to student participants.

SCHEDULE:

Part-Time

Monday – Friday

2:00 pm – 6:00 pm (Days/shifts vary depending on site needs)

This role requires you to be in person.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Build strong relationships with and among students
  2. Implement an approved LEADERSHIP curriculum
  3. Guide peer discussions to relevant leadership topics
  4. Teach or co-lead daily activities
  5. Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students
  6. Prepare materials for daily activities
  7. Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests
  8. Support the coordination of program events
  9. Input data and prepare reports
  10. Administer pre and post-assessments and evaluations for student activities

QUALITIES WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  1. Demonstrated ability to lead activities with children and teens
  2. Creativity
  3. Must have excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills
  4. Experience working with children and/or teens
  5. Ability to multitask and manage workflow in a fast-paced environment
  6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program staff, school personnel, parents
  7. Sensitive to social-emotional needs and characteristics of students
  8. Self-starter who takes initiative
  9. Flexibility, reliability, and sound judgment
  10. Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent
  2. Must be at least 18 years of age
  3. College credits and/or degrees are highly preferred
  4. Minimum of two years of instructing experience is required
  5. Experience working with children strongly preferred
  6. May be required to walk up and down stairs.
  7. May have to lift or move objects/materials as needed.
  8. Work is permitted mostly within a New York City Public School but may be required to interact with community-at-large during trips or events.
  9. Specialists will be required to report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents, and school administration.
  10. At the time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and the Department of Health.

SASF, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, is one of the largest providers of school-based after-school programs in New York City and the metropolitan region. We serve more than 20,000 students in over 150 public schools. These students typically live in low-income neighborhoods and attend academically struggling schools in grades K-12.

Programs run year-round before and after school, on Saturdays, over school holiday periods and during the summer.  Programs, provided free of charge, are primarily funded with public monies that are supplemented with private funds.
