Northeast Florida State Hospital:Licensed Practical Nurse

Pay rate: $30.00 per hour.

Sign-on bonus: $750.00 sign on bonus (1 year commitment).

Job Description:

This is a State of Florida Psychiatric Hospital which operates 24/7, 7 days a week. This state-owned hospital has 613 beds in 19 living areas and provides inpatient psychiatric care for clients committed to the hospital by the state or through the criminal justice system.

TYPE OF PATIENTS: The hospital accepts adults 18 and older whose needs can’t be met through treatment in a community-based program. The program provides evaluation, assessment, and treatment to clients who are deemed not guilty due to insanity or who are incompetent and can’t proceed with criminal proceedings.

Hours: 3 days a week, 12 hour shifts 7:00am-7:30pm or 7:00pm-7:30am (30-minute unpaid lunch) This facility operates 24/7.  Candidate may be required to work 16-hour shift as needed.

Note: Candidates will need to attend a two-week orientation, working Monday - Friday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm or 7:00 am-3:30 pm in classroom then one week shadowing DCF nurses.

Driving requirement:

Nurses will be required to drive state vehicles transporting patients to outside facility doctor appointments and hospitals. Some may be required to be a "sitter" with the patient during an outside hospital stay.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.
  • Must hold unencumbered licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • One year of nursing experience, strongly preferred.
  • Must be CPR certified, or able to complete training.
  • Must be able to complete full orientation at time of hire.
  • Must be able to fulfill physical requirements of position including ability to lift and carry 20 lbs., remain alert while on duty, and work 16-hour shifts on occasion.

Duties:

  • Assess resident complaints and determine action, notifying supervisor when necessary.
  • Admit and transfer residents to and from other units or outside sources.
  • Administer oral and/or injectable medication and controlled medications in accordance with facility policy, and within their scope of practice as defined by Florida law.
  • Observe for side effects or adverse effects to medication and report to assigned supervisor, or further assessment and treatment.
  • Prepare paperwork as required for consults within facility and outside appointments.
  • Coordinate residents’ appointments with unit staff to ensure medications are appropriately timed as need for resident movement to and from the unit.
  • Provide emergency medical/psychiatric treatment within scope of practice as defined by facility and Florida law and notifying supervisor for further assistance.
  • Complete incident reports factually and objectively, within the appropriate time frame as defined by the facility.
  • Complete progress notes on resident care within the appropriate time frame as defined by the facility.
  • Advocate for residents’ recovery and safety.
  • Maintain appropriate and professional behavior during interactions with residents’, supervisors, and other staff members.
  • Display professionalism throughout employment including, but not limited to, arriving to work on time, maintaining an accurate timesheet, and maintaining professional appearance as defined by facility policy.
