Job Description Summary

As a Hospitalist Physician at SSH, you will report, through the Hospitalist Program directors, to the Chief of the Department of Medicine. You will perform medical services faithfully, with due diligence and efficiency, in accordance with applicable standards of your profession, canons of professional ethics, and all laws and SSH policies. SSH recognizes that teamwork and flexibility are essential to providing 24-hour patient-centered care. You are expected to be respectful of your patients, other health care providers, and the physicians and staff of SSH, maintaining professionalism and HIPAA standards regarding patient information confidentiality.

Job Description

Essential Functions

  1. Patient Care
    1. Provide clinically appropriate care, including prompt response to emergency consults and attendance at all codes.
    2. Ensure that patient care needs are met by prioritizing tasks effectively.
    3. Show compassion when dealing with patients.
    4. Demonstrate consistent professionalism in interactions with patients.
    5. Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
  2. Communication
    1. Keep patients and families well informed of medical issues.
    2. Keep other hospitalists informed of active issues.
    3. Keep referral PCPs and specialists informed.
    4. Be receptive to feedback and constructive criticism.
  3. Documentation
    1. Admission H&P clearly addresses abnormal findings and includes a well-focused plan for inpatient evaluation.
    2. Progress notes are well written, clinically appropriate, and include review of abnormal findings.
    3. Daily progress notes clearly indicate why continued inpatient care is necessary.
    4. Document rhythm review for patients on telemetry and rationale for continued monitoring.
    5. Discharge summaries are dictated on the day of discharge, include plans for post-acute or outpatient follow-up, and identify outstanding issues at discharge.
    6. Identify primary care physicians in all dictated documentation.
    7. Ensure legible handwriting and that all orders are timed and dated.
    8. Complete medical records on a weekly basis.
    9. Adhere to the institutional “Do Not Abbreviate List.”
    10. Be knowledgeable and compliant with E&M coding and HIPAA regulations.
  4. Teamwork
    1. Contribute to the professional growth of the practice and participate in group and hospital meetings.
    2. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with case managers, physician reviewers, nurses, and therapists.
    3. Maintain professional relationships with referral physicians and medical staff.
    4. Promptly respond to ED physicians and help facilitate ED patient flow.
    5. Start each shift on time.
    6. Complete required office paperwork in a timely fashion.
    7. Be courteous to others and promote mutual respect.
  5. Efficiency
    1. Meet expected productivity levels when admitting patients.
    2. Meet expected productivity levels when rounding on patients.
    3. Discharge patients in a timely fashion.
    4. Establish and manage clinical priorities effectively.

Minimum Requirements

Requires an Internal Medicine or Family Medicine background. Must maintain a flexible schedule to work shifts on nights and weekends. Must be fluent in English, both verbal and written, and have experience in direct patient care. ACLS certification required and maintain Board Certification status.
