Principal Applied Scientist, AI Labs Computer Vision

Job summary
Join us in a historic endeavor to make Multimodal AI accessible to the world with breakthrough research! The Multimodal AI team has a world-leading team of researchers and academics. We develop the algorithms and models that power AWS AI services such as Bedrock Data Automation, Transcribe, Textract and Rekognition.

We are looking for Principal Scientists to join us and make the AI revolution happen through innovative research inspired by customer needs. A Principal Scientist in AWS AI Labs is a hands-on contributor, who identifies and shapes directions for forward-looking research and develops innovative solutions to hard, previously unsolved customer problems. You will partner with senior managers and Directors and guide the research of individual scientists. You will work closely with engineering teams to define the architectures and solutions that transform multimodal AI research into services operating at AWS scale. You are expected to lead new areas of research and publish your research results at peer-reviewed conferences and workshops.

Our research themes include, but are not limited to: multimodal understanding of documents/video/audio, post-training of multimodal FMs including supervised fine-tuning and RL, automated annotations, in-context learning and context compression, model distillation and optimization.

We are currently located in the US (Seattle and Bay Area) and Israel (Haifa and Tel Aviv). Additional locations include New York City.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduate degree (MS or PhD) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or Physics or related field.
* 7+ years of experience in AI and Machine Learning in industry and/or academia.
* 3+ years of experience recruiting and managing PhD level Scientists, Researchers and Engineers from industry and/or academia.
* Proven research science publication background with a track record of thought leadership and contributions that have advanced the field.
* Strong skills in programming languages, such as C/C++ and Python.
* Proven experience in commercializing computer vision, machine learning, or deep learning solutions.
* Strong record of delivery in industry and academic contexts, ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
* PhD or MSc in computer science or related fields.
* 10+ years of experience in AI, Machine Learning, and Natural Language Processing in industry and/or academia.
* 5+ years of experience recruiting and managing PhD level Scientists, Researchers and Engineers.
* Strong publication history in top peer-reviewed conferences.
* Proven experience in designing and delivering computer vision or machine learning systems with multiple components.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $179,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $309,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
