Avellino Lab USA (Avellino) is seeking a Principal Bio-Informatics Scientist to analyze NGS data sets with an emphasis on custom targeted panels. Develop a CLIA compliant pipeline for the processing of sequencing data. The successful candidate will play a key role in the development of our Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) analysis software and assays. Experience working with and developing pipelines for the analysis of sequencing data is required. Hands-on sequencing experience using at least one of the leading NGS platforms (Ion Torrent, Illumina) is highly desired. The bioinformatician will work closely with our IT team. The successful applicant will bring significant experience in NGS data analysis and reporting, and knowledge of the key steps required for DNA variant detection.

  • Design and implement bioinformatics analysis pipelines for processing next-generation sequencing data. Document code and use repository best practices. 
  • Integrate computational methods/pipelines with AWS computing resources.
  • Work closely with customers and partners on collaborative projects, including defining the scope of the collaboration, researching the scientific topics and implementing the appropriate bioinformatics solutions that meet project timelines.
  • Develop new statistical techniques to improve low-frequency variant detection 
  • Prepare customer reports and internal company presentations of assay results 
  • Present findings at internal meetings, scientific conferences, and customer sites; participate in the write-up and publication of scientific findings


 In-depth familiarity with NGS analysis techniques (DNA-, RNA-, and Custom Panel


Experience with common bioinformatic tools uses such as BWA, Bowtie, GATK, etc. 
Experience developing, testing, and debugging the bioinformatics pipeline from variant calling to variant filtering and annotation 
Excellent track record of analyzing next-generation sequencing data and performing network

Demonstrated knowledge of statistics, statistical genetics, bioinformatics concepts, methods, and tools. Familiarity with genomic data tools, repositories, and databases 
Strong attention to detail and solid analytical skills 
Ability to work hard and independently while contributing to the team effort and adhering to deadlines 

  • At least 5+ years of post-doctoral/professional experience including 3+ years of industry experience
  • Experienced user of shell scripting, Python or R Programming Language and
  • the setting up of analysis pipelines
  • Evaluate and improve open-source tools for variant data analysis, including developing reports encompassing SNP analysis and INDEL.
  • Develop or extend in-house workflow to streamline NGS data analysis workflow and visualization
