The position within the Behavioral Health Division provides clinical psychiatric care for SEARHC patients, focusing on diagnosing and treating mental and emotional disorders. Treatment is mainly outpatient, with potential consultation-liaison and emergency services in some locations. The Psychiatrist collaborates with other providers as part of an interdisciplinary behavioral health team.

Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job

  • Provides high-quality, evidence-based psychiatric care, including evaluations, psychotherapy, medication management, emergency triage, inpatient consultation, and liaison services.
  • Performs differential diagnosis, determines appropriate level of care, and coordinates treatment with medical providers and care systems.
  • Treats complex cases, offering education, consultation, and support to patients, families, and other health professionals.
  • Provides consultation and guidance to non-physician psychiatric staff and supervises as needed.
  • Documents all patient interactions per SEARHC standards.
  • Approaches patients respectfully, fostering effective therapeutic relationships.
  • Collaborates positively with healthcare team members.
  • Demonstrates cultural competence in communication with diverse populations.
  • Supports psychiatric residents through supervision, mentoring, and teaching.
  • Maintains confidentiality according to standards and regulations.
  • Participates in Medical Staff activities and committees.

Education, Certifications, and Licenses

  • MD or DO degree.
  • Completion of an AMA-accredited psychiatric residency program.
  • Unrestricted medical license in Alaska.
  • Active DEA registration; Buprenorphine registration preferred.
  • Ongoing board certification in psychiatry.
  • BLS certification.

Knowledge

  • Current best practices in psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, including substance abuse.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of psychopharmacology.
  • Understanding of medical staff bylaws, policies, and ethical standards.

Skills

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Clinical judgment for assessing complex and emergency situations.
  • Ability to build cooperative relationships with patients and colleagues.
