School of Education, Part-Time Adjunct
Position Details
The School of Education (SOE) at Loyola University Chicago invites applications for part-time instructors to teach in the SOE’s Teaching and Learning (T&L) program area during the 2022-2023 academic year and beyond. The T&L program runs Loyola’s CAEP-accredited teacher education program, TLLSC (Teaching, Learning and Leading with Schools and Communities).
Candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to urban education and dedication to serving a historically minoritized student population consistent with Loyola’s commitment to advancing social justice through transformative education. Credentials, background, and teaching experiences in the following areas are typical areas of need within our program:
- Elementary education (grades 1-6) with experience in literacy and/or social studies.
- Preschool (ages 3-5) and early elementary (K-2) teaching.
- Middle grades (5-8) and secondary (9-12) education, including content area instruction in areas such as mathematics.
- Culturally responsive and anti-racist pedagogy, along with a social justice lens on educational psychology, child development, and educational policy.
- Serving culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
- Special education (PK-21).
- Supervision of internship experiences. We are also seeking experienced educators who can support our students during their final one-year internship.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Teaching up to six credit hours courses or modules per semester. Undergraduate field-based courses are typically offered during the morning, with university-based courses offered in the late afternoon or evening. Graduate courses typically take place in the afternoon and evening. Courses (2-3 credit hours) are offered in university classrooms, while modules (1-6 credit hours) are field-based learning experiences primarily taught within partner sites.
- Supporting existing partnerships with schools and community agencies through collaborative on-site work with teachers and administrators to support field-based teaching and learning.
- Collaboration with T&L chairs and faculty in ensuring consistency and quality across sections and semesters. Part-time faculty receive resources and support from faculty leads, chairs, and program coordinators in order to become familiar with our program, syllabi, assignments, and systems/technology.
- Face-to-face instruction. Note that our teacher education programs are largely face-to-face or hybrid in format (and not solely online), so PT faculty would ideally be available to teach on Loyola’s campus and to visit partner sites where indicated.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Earned Master’s or Doctorate in appropriate area(s) of education.
- 3+ years of experience as a Preschool-Grade 12 educator in an area of need listed above.
- Current or previous state educator licensure.
- Successful prior work in teacher education.
Preferred Experiential Qualifications:
- Urban education experiences and in efforts to address social justice.
- Supervision or field-based work with practicum students and/or interns.
Special Instructions to Applicants
Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled. The anticipated start date for fall teaching positions is August 15th, and January 1st for spring teaching. Applicants are asked to submit (1) a brief cover letter that explains interest in and fit for this position, (2) an up-to-date curriculum vitae, (3) the names and contact information of three professional references, and (4) a 1-2 page statement outlining their envisioned role in advocating for social justice and equity as a teacher educator.
