The Senior Counsel will have a thorough understanding of company policies and objectives and under general supervision will manage responsibilities of the Law Division as assigned. His or her work involves handling, directing and providing assistance on matters of significance that impact the organization. This position is for an experienced attorney with thorough competence in several legal areas of concentration and broad-based experience and sound judgment.


* Providing legal counsel and support for human resources business partners, as needed, in the following areas:

* Assisting with review and drafting HR policies and procedures
* Providing legal counsel to HR leaders and staff on changes in law to ensure legal compliance
* Leading and directing employment litigation matters, working as a collaborative partner with outside counsel retained to represent Horace Mann and its affiliates
* Evaluating and assisting HR in responding to employee complaints
* Providing employment law support for HR internal investigations
* Providing legal counsel and support to the Horace Mann Marketing Department on all Agent matters, and leading and directing agent litigation matters, working as a collaborative partner with outside counsel retained to represent Horace Mann and its affiliates
* Providing legal counsel, as needed, in the following areas:

* Advising on data privacy and security matters
* Drafting, reviewing and negotiating a variety of commercial contracts, including agreements procuring software and other technology-related licenses and services
* Assisting with corporate governance matters
* Monitoring and reporting on legislative and regulatory developments in areas of responsibility
* Providing assistance and support in management of litigation in areas of responsibility
* Advising on complex legal matters by utilizing expertise and strategic thinking to assess risk and recommend effective and appropriate solutions
* Influencing cross-functional decision-making by collaborating with internal partners to help guide development of company policies and best practices
* Creating a positive environment by modeling cultural expectations and guiding leaders to reward performance, accountability, diversity and inclusion, flexibility, continuous improvement, collaboration, and creativity
* Effectively managing resources by anticipating expenditures and accurately forecasting resource needs/costs
* Advising and supporting the General Counsel and other senior members of the legal department as well as other business area partners with respect to the duties and responsibilities outlined above

* Juris Doctor from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association
* Must be admitted to practice law in Illinois or eligible to register as an In-House Counsel in the State of Illinois
* Minimum five (5) years broad-based, relevant legal experience
* A strong desire to learn and assume ownership of highly complex, sometimes novel, legal issues
* Excellent analytical, organizational, verbal and written communication skills
* Ability to provide top-quality, proactive, accurate and effective legal support in a fast-moving environment
* Ability to effectively work with management and other personnel
* Strong academic credentials
* Law firm and in-house legal department experience (strongly preferred)
