Description
The STEM Laboratory Technician is responsible for providing personal, qualified laboratory assistance to the STEM laboratories. The primary responsibility is to prepare a series of laboratory preparations and the instructors assistance related to specific content areas of chemistry.
This is a Support Staff Union position as stated in the Support Staff collective bargaining agreement Grade Level 9
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare, set up, and test laboratory experiments for Engineering (Electrical and Mechanical), Physics, and Physical Science courses
- Assemble, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment, including electrical, mechanical, and physics equipment
- Troubleshoot and repair malfunctioning equipment, experimental setups, and instrumentation
- Ensure all laboratory activities comply with established safety standards and procedures
- Maintain organized inventory of laboratory equipment, tools, and consumable materials; work with Lab Supervisor reorder supplies as needed
- Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance, lab setups, and safety inspections
- Coordinate preparation and breakdown of multiple lab sessions across different disciplines and schedules
- Utilize relevant software and tools to support lab activities
- Perform basic fabrication and technical tasks such as wiring circuits, soldering, and using 3D printers, scanners, CNC machines, hand or power tools
- Ensure laboratory spaces remain clean, organized, and functional for instructional use
- Adapt lab setups and materials to meet varying course requirements and instructional needs
- Follow the Right -To- Know law as it applies to the Engineering, Physics and Physical Science.
- Prepare, properly label and store all solutions required in the related laboratory courses.
- Receive and check in purchased materials.
- Prepare recommendations for equipment purchase for the Engineering, Physics and Physical Science labs and related areas.
- Meet with appropriate faculty and the area Supervisor on a regular basis for communication and coordination.
- Coordinate with the College Chemical Hygiene Safety Officer to train full time faculty and adjuncts teaching in the laboratory of the related areas according to the Right- To- Know law.
- Train any students that are hired to work in the related laboratories.
- Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Education Required: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering preferred; consideration for Bachelor's Degree in
Physics
Experience Required: One (1) to two (2) years of technician experience directly related to the Engineering and/or Physics educational laboratories
Experience Preferred:
- Experience with electrical engineering equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzer, multimeters, etc.), 3D printers, CNC machines, Festo trainers, Arduino boards, soldering; experience with telescopes and power tools also a plus
- Experience with relevant software (e.g. CAD, Autodesk Fusion, Multisim,
- IdeaMaker, Cura, Solidworks, GNU Octave, Arduino)
Skills/Abilities /Knowledge /Other Requirements
- Ability to provide support and assistance in educational Engineering and Physics laboratory facilities
- Ability to calibrate, troubleshoot and maintain equipment in the Engineering and Physics laboratory facilities
- Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of Physics and Basic Engineering
- Principles, as well as direct experience in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering laboratory facilities
