Location: Blue Springs, MO
Contract Duration:  13 week contract with a possibility of extension
Pay Rate: $22/hr
Work Schedule: Mon-Fri
Shift:  6:45am-6:15pm

POSITION SUMMARY: The purpose of the job is to provide support, guidance, and education within the surgical environment as it relates to appropriate instrumentation, maintenance of a sterile field, and safe practices to enhance patient outcomes.  

  • Identifies surgical technician educational needs through observation and audits as it relates to infection control practices at the sterile field, efficiency in case preparations, and overall knowledge of instrumentation.
  • Conduct quality audits to insure appropriate infection control and compliance safe guards are followed to drive expected patient outcomes. 
  • Act as the OR Liaison to actively address OR frictions as it relates to instrument issues.  Collaborates with supervisors and staff to provide guidance in instrument needs and resource management.
  • Provides periodic tray reviews with surgeons, supervisors, and staff to streamline/minimize tray contents. 
  • Maintains preference cards to provide accurate case preparation and appropriate resources needed during surgical procedures.  Requires periodic reviews with surgeons in order to drive accuracy, decrease cost associated with waste, increase efficiency within the surgical environment. 
  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of basic patient care concepts: Performs and/or provides scrub assistance during procedures which reflect awareness of anatomy, necessary principles, skills, supplies and adequate knowledge base. Assists the circulating nurse in implementing the preoperative plan of care to include patient positioning, confirmation/preparation of operative site, updating physician preference card, care of operative specimens and room turnover.  Demonstrates the application of the principles of sepsis: Adheres to unit specific standards, policies and procedures for aseptic technique. 
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform the role of first scrub on all basic surgical cases:   Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, which includes passing instruments, sutures and other items appropriate to the procedure.  Establishes and maintains and organized sterile field. Assists the surgeon by retracting tissue, holding instrumentation to provide exposure and cutting suture under the direct supervision of the surgeon.  Supply Room Access: Enters supply room(s) on nursing units as needed to perform necessary job functions. Refrains from manipulating or removing any intravenous fluids that are stored in the area.
  • Selects proper sterilization method of instruments/equipment sterilizes prior to procedures, as necessary and verifies instruments as sterile. Takes corrective action when any unsafe practice, conditions or breaks in aseptic technique occur and reports information to the circulating nurse. Demonstrates basic surgical case preparation skills: Assists with pulling cases and checks case cart for completeness, obtains supplies and equipment and determines them to be in good working order before a case begins. Prepares the operating room by opening sterile supplies, instruments, and sutures based on scheduled procedure and surgeon preference card.  Follows policies for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, setting up back table, draping and counting with the circulating nurse.
Education and Work Experience
1. Graduate of an Operating Room Technician or Surgical Technician training program or on the job training with a minimum of 3 years’ experience (surgical setting preferred).
2. Experience in scrubbing minor and major procedures in various surgical specialties (i.e. General, Ortho, Urology and GYN).
3. Current BCLS (AHA) upon hire and maintain current.
4. Three years’ experience working in an acute care operating room, functions as primary scrub role.
5. Previous work experience on an open-heart team may be substituted for acute care operating room experience.
6. Must be proficient in the following specialties: General Surgery, Gynecology, Urology, Orthopedics, ENT/Plastics.
7. Proficient is defined as the associate can perform cases in that specialty independently.
