We are seeking a Temporary Surgical Support Technician who will assist staff in the daily operations of the Perioperative Surgical Area. This assignment will last 3 to 4 months. Responsible for assisting the nursing staff in patient care within the scope of practice, while maintaining a clean environment, engaging in family communication as well as various other duties as needed for operational/service excellence. Transporting patients to their designated room assigned within hospital policy is also a responsibility.

In this position you will:

  • Transport patients safely to receiving unit per policy. Responsible for anticipating patient needs and exhibits compassion

  • Communicate with nursing staff regarding patient transfer. Maintains standard of care during transport

  • Be responsible for cleaning transport devices and equipment used in transport before returning to designated unit in the perioperative

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of equipment needed in transport and patient care (i.e., O2, IV's)

  • Assist nursing staff by performing a variety of duties for patient safety measures throughout perioperative care

  • Able to correctly perform hand asepsis, and wear sterile gloves to hold limbs as needed during patient skin preps by the RN Circulator

  • Transport non-narcotic medications, and blood products between appropriate destinations

  • Assist with the transfer of patient from gurney/bed to surgical bed, and assist with proper patient positioning

  • Perform pre-operative hair removal of operative site as directed by nursing staff in a timely fashion to maintain the surgery schedule

  • Provide comfort and support for patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient’s care and privacy

  • Provide assistance to the RN Circulator as needed for site prepping, maintaining aseptic technique

  • Maintain aseptic technique and when questionable aseptic technique is noted, speaks up professionally and informs the RN Circulator

  • Assist with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies

  • Perform between cases clean-up in O.R. using established best practices for O.R. cleaning and infection control

  • Assist with preparing operating room for any upcoming case(s)

  • Anticipate needed equipment for scheduled procedures. Assists in set-up, and performs pre-check to ensure proper function

  • Inventory and stock the perioperative area and specific operating rooms with supplies as assigned

  • Support and maintain environment of care process for designated rooms (5S)

  • Assist with orienting and educating others on work area function and needs, for process improvement or new hire

  • Provide and maintains a healthy and safe environment for the patient and staff by complying with regulatory agency requirements and standards set forth by professional organizations and institutional policies

  • Professionally communicates and performs other related duties outside immediate work area as assigned or required (i.e., transport, reception, EVS)

  • DOCUMENTATION/INFORMATION MANAGEMENT:

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of hospital information and other computer-based systems (email, online learning program, timecard review and correction, etc.)

  • Maintain paper based or electronic logs of activities as assigned

  • Demonstrate awareness of legal issues and compliance with respect to patient care

  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient and hospital related information

  • Secure and handle patient records maintaining patient confidentiality with respect to patient and family rights

  • Learn and maintain effective product/supply ordering process as assigned

  • LEADERSHIP/SUPERVISION:

  • Assist and provide orientation/training of new employees and students

  • DEVELOPMENT:

  • Attend all assigned staff meetings, development activities, and work groups

  • Participate in all in-services and cross training activities as necessary

  • Assume responsibility for own professional growth and practice

  • COMPETENCY CHARTING PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT:

  • Is knowledgeable of hospital-wide Performance/Process Improvement (P.I.) Methodology (5S, Kaizen, performance improvement, etc.)

  • Offer suggestions and actively participates in departmental and/or hospital-wide Performance/Process Improvement

  • BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and prioritize time to achieve maximum efficiency when completing work duties and assignments

  • Always exercises financial prudence. Identifies opportunities for cost savings

  • Be responsible for knowledge and compliance with budget and staffing standards. Works overtime only with prior approval of supervisor

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • American Heart Association (AHA) - Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider

  • Knowledge of infection prevention principles

  • Knowledge of environmental hygiene in the Operating Room

  • Knowledge of patient and staff safety in the perioperative areas

  • Prioritizing work assigned, managing work time, and keeping team members aware of status of work assigned

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with members of the surgical and hospital health care team

  • Able to maintain environments and supplies as needed

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Demonstrated effective problem solving skills

  • Able to effectively manage duties with minimum supervision

  • Demonstrated ability to provide best possible customer service

  • Able to demonstrate safe patient handling and assist with lifting/moving patients

  • Able to take call on weekends and holidays, as assigned

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

  • One (1) year of Environmental service hospital experience

  • Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology

  • Basic knowledge of related surgical procedures and related equipment
