Dick's Sporting Goods, commonly known as Dick's, is a sporting goods retail chain headquartered in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania.
Richard "Dick" Stack founded Dick's Sporting Goods in 1948 when he was just 18 years of age. He had worked at an army/navy store and investigated the idea of expanding its line to include fishing and camping supplies. The store's owner rejected the suggestion, and Stack recounted the story to his grandmother. She encouraged Stack to follow his dreams and gave him $300 to open his first outlet, a small fishing supply store.
From these humble beginnings, Dick's Sporting Goods has grown to become one of the world's largest sports retail chains. It is a Fortune 500 company, with 558 stores based in 46 U.S. states. Most of these stores are located in the eastern part of the United States. In addition, Dick's Sporting Goods owns specialty gold retailer Golf Galaxy, which has 82 stores in 30 states. The company employs 34,300 staff members. Its 2013 financial year revenue totaled $6.21 billion.
