Founded in 1984 in Dallas, Texas, Gamestop is the largest video game, consumer electronics and wireless phone sales company in the world and currently trades on the New York Stock Exchange. The company was initially formed to sell PC software and games. As home gaming took over the marketplace, sales of the Atari 2600 and Nintendo grew the business to new heights, with it's initial public offering taking place only 4 years after opening. Operations expanded from a single store to now over 6,457 stores across the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. They operate under several brands, including EB Games, BuyMyTronics and the eponymous Gamestop. The company also owns Kongregate, an online gaming website; Game Informer, a gaming magazine; Simply Mac, an Apple Products resale shop; and Aio Wireless, an AT&T prepaid wireless retailer.
Operations of Gamestop are split into two categories, Video Game Brands, which deals with retail sales, and Technology Brands, founded in 2013, which deals with the other operations, including magazines, and their retail locations that sell phones and consumer electronics. Even with these new ventures, over 47 percent of the company's income came from used game sales in 2013. Today, Gamestop's headquarters is in Grapevine, Texas, and the company employs 17,000 full-time workers worldwide. The company made a revenue of $9.04 billion in 2013 alone, primarily based on the release of several new gaming systems.
The company provides a wide array of services in the gaming industry including brick and mortar retail locations, online sales and game trade-ins across every gaming system. New to the Gamestop lineup in Gamestop TV, which gives consumers a chance to preview and play games that have recently emerged on the market. Because it is a publicly traded company, Gamestop not only drives value with customers, vendors and employees, but with shareholders as well.
