In 1946, Maxwell Kohl built the first Kohl's Food Store, the largest supermarket chain in the Milwaukee area. He opened the first Kohl's Department Store in Brookfield, Wisconsin in 1962 and sold everything from sporting goods to engine oil to candy. After selling the controlling interest to Kohl's Corporation in 1972, the Kohl family continued to manage the company until 1979.
The focus on expansion started in 1986 when a group of investors led by the senior management acquired the company. Starting with 40 stores, they increased to 67 stores over the next two years. With the purchase of MainStreet, a Chicago-based chain consisting of 26 locations, they expanded into Illinois, Minneapolis and Michigan. In 1992, the company went public, and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Kohl's is the second largest department store chain in The United States based on retail sales with an annual revenue of $1.7 billion. Headquartered in a suburb of Milwaukee in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, they operate about 1,200 stores in every state except Hawaii.
