Mine Safety Appliances Overview
Mine Safety Appliances, or MSA, has hundreds of patents and has created thousands of products for the job safety industry. MSA, a world-wide leader in worker protection, was created after the 1912 Jed Mine explosion, which took 80 miner's lives. Prior to MSA, there were very few companies who created products specifically designed to keep miners safe. Mine engineer, John T Ryan Sr. partnered with colleague George H Deike to create products that would help curb mine explosions. The two then enlisted one of the most famous inventors of all time, Thomas Edison, and eventually developed the electric cab lamp.
Thomas Edison was particularly proud of their invention, and later stated that it was the invention that would do the most for humanity out of everything he created during his lifetime. Ryan and Deike didn't stop at the electric cab lamp, and began creating other safety products for the mining industry. The company also now makes safety products for a variety of jobs, including miners, firefighters and the military.
Now a global company, MSA was officially founded on June 14, 1914 and has maintained its headquarters in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania. The company, with about 5,300 employees, has annual revenues of over $1 billion. MSA, The Safety Company, has developed many products to encourage worker safety, from first-aid kits to state of the art thermal imaging cameras.
