Tristate Generation Overview
Founded in 1952, Tristate Generation and Transmission Association is a wholesale electric power supplier owned by the 44 electrical cooperatives that it serves in a 200,000 square mile area across Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Nebraska. It's goal is to supply a reliable, cost-effective supply of electricity through a variety of sources including clean coal, natural gas, solar, wind and hydroelectric facilities. Headquartered in Westminster, Colorado, Tristate Generation employs 1,500 workers across the 4 states that it serves. What started as a company that served only 41,000 consumers, now serves 1.5 million residents. In the 2013 financial statements, the company made revenues totaling $1.09 billion, with $1.4 billion invested to better serve it's members.
The company has a storied history beginning with it's first power plant in 1952, all the way to new wind farms and solar plants throughout the west. Tristate Generation focuses mainly on current power sources, as well as developing new power sources in the future. The breakdown of power resources include 60 percent coal and natural gas, 15 percent renewable energy, 21 percent purchased power, and 4 percent intermediate and peaking resources. In 2001, Tristate signed a contract with all 44 members of it's electrical cooperative, making the company the exclusive energy provider for the area through 2040.
In accordance with state and federal regulations, Tristate Generation prides itself on lowering emissions during day to day operations. State of the art environmental controls are in operation at all of the company's plants, allowing the company to exceed all federal clean air and clean water standards. Tristate Generation is also responsible for the maintenance of over 5,200 miles of electrical transmission line in order to maintain strict safety standards and reliable power to it's customers, specifically because a majority of customers are in rural areas.
