The company started in 1820, but at the time, they offered printing, mailing and design services to companies in the financial sector. Founded in London, England, the company has grown drastically over the nearly 200 years it has been in business. They have also acquired several other companies, such as Bowne Business Solutions in 2004, Uniscribe and Creatis in 2005, and The Stationery Office in 2006. Williams Lea also joined forces with Deutsche Post, rebranding itself as Williams Lea Deutschland in 2007.
