It is the county seat of Westmoreland County, and the city itself is split between Westmoreland and Laurel Highlands Counties in the greater Pittsburgh area. Greensburg was once part of a wagon trail over the Allegheny Mountains from Philadelphia to Fort Pitt. Growth was slow in the area until around 1965, when the Greengate Mall was opened. With the opening of the malls, downtown Greensburg shifted its focus to revitalization of the historic buildings, which began to draw tourism and also created more Greensburg jobs.
