Interpreter and Translator Employment Information
Interpreter Job Overview
Interpreters translate information from one language into another. Interpreters use spoken or sign language to communicate, while translators work in written language. Interpreters work in businesses, courts, schools, hospitals, and other diverse settings. Interpreter jobs may also include positions that require bilingual applicants not necessarily to translate but to communicate with customers who speak other languages. For example, interpreter positions may include bilingual customer service representative jobs and bilingual healthcare customer service representative jobs.
Interpreter Job Education Requirements
Interpreters typically must have at least a college education, but the most important qualification is fluency in at least two languages. As a result, applicants who speak two languages but don't have any formal education in either may still qualify for some interpreter jobs. Many interpreters were raised speaking both languages, but some may have acquired the language later in life.
Interpreter jobs that require a college education may not necessarily require that the applicant have majored in a language. Instead, employers may look for bilingual applicants who majored in a field relevant to the company's area of expertise, such as business or software.
Interpreter Job Market
Job prospects for interpreters are excellent according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS expects employment of interpreters and translators to grow 46 percent by 2022, which is more than four times the national average for all professions. The growth of the profession is the result of an increasingly diverse American population as well as the globalization of American industry. Spanish-speaking interpreters are likely to be in especially high demand, as the United States now has 41 million native Spanish speakers in addition to 11 million bilingual speakers.
Interpreter Job Salary Information
The BLS reports the median salary for interpreters and translators as $43,590. Those in the 90th percentile for wages earn $80,650, while those in the 10th percentile make $22,240.
