Aeronautical Engineer Jobs Overview
Do you have high ambitions? In aeronautical engineering, the sky is not the limit—it's only the beginning. Aeronautical engineer jobs help create civil or military aircraft, such as airplanes, helicopters, and drones. As an aeronautical engineer, you'll develop, manufacture, or test aircraft and aircraft parts or weapons and weapon systems for the military.
If you're inspired to understand how and why mechanical objects work and you enjoy designing, building, and watching your creations take flight, a career in aerospace engineering could be right for you.
Aeronautical engineers typically specialize in one or more of the following areas:
- researching and developing aircraft
- developing new aircraft technologies, like modern navigational systems
- designing aircraft and parts using computer-aided design (CAD) software
- supervising aircraft assembly
- producing and testing aircraft and aircraft components
- designing or supervising testing facilities
- inspecting, maintaining, and repairing aircraft
Aeronautical engineering is a subcategory of aerospace engineering. This category also includes astronautical engineering, which focuses on spacecraft. You can also look into other engineering jobs, like:
Aeronautical Engineer Education and Skills
Aeronautical engineers usually have a bachelor's degree in aerospace or aeronautical engineering from a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). If you want to work in research and development, you'll need a graduate degree.
While most other engineers pursue an engineering license during college or shortly after graduating, licensing is not as common for aeronautical engineers. Acquiring a license will, however, enable you to work independently and take on a leadership role. If you want to take this route, you can obtain a Professional Engineering license (PE) from a state license board after you have a few years of work experience. You'll also need to pass the fundamentals of engineering (FE) exam.
Aerospace engineers need to be meticulous; have excellent math, physics, and technical writing skills; and communicate well. People skills are important because you'll be working on large projects that can involve a team of engineers, designers, and project managers. You'll also need a healthy dose of creativity to fuel the initial design stage and solve design problems.
