Position Title:  Communications and Outreach – VISTA Summer AssociateConservation Legacy Program: Stewards Individual Placement  Site Location: Southwest Conservation Corps  Based in Durango, CO Or Salida CO, depending on applicant preference. 701 Camino del Rio, Suite 101, Durango Colorado, 81301701 Rainbow Blvd, Salida CO, 81201 Terms of Service:<ul><li class="MsoNormal">Start Date: 6/15/2026 </li><li class="MsoNormal">End Date: 8/21/2026</li><li class="MsoNormal">AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 300 hours</li></ul> Purpose:The VISTA will support Southwest Conservation Corps in building capacity by developing tools, templates and systems focused on outreach initiatives.  This role will support the organization in community engagement, fund diversification, and social media systems. The position will be based in one of SCC’s two offices but will provide capacity support for both. Program Summary: The Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is a program of the non-profit service organization, Conservation Legacy, that is built on the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) that operated from 1933 – 1942. SCC provides youth and young adults opportunities to complete conservation projects on public lands. While serving with SCC, members receive training on job skills, conflict resolution, leadership, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Programs are developed using a step ladder approach to provide a progression of skill development based on a member’s needs. Members receive a weekly living allowance, training, and an AmeriCorps Education Award (for qualifying individuals).  SCC has offices in both Durango and Salida, Colorado. Description of Duties:Objective 1: Fund DevelopmentThe VISTA will help each office expand funding revenue through community connections, sponsorship opportunities, and exploring donor outreach.<ol><li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal">Create templates for sponsorship curation.</li><li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal">Compile community resources for donor connections and solicitation.</li><li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal">Develop and strengthen connections with individuals and organizations withing SCC’s service area to create giving and funding opportunities.</li></ol>Objective 2: Story Collection and SharingThe VISTA will develop internal outreach frameworks focused on information gathering and community engagement.<ol><li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal"> Develop tools, templates, and systems for staff to collect and share impact stories.</li><li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal">Develop communications templates, content calendars, and suggested messaging for SCC staff use.</li><li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal">Compile resources around best practices for where and how to share impact stories in the community for increased visibility and engagement.</li><li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal">Develop and implement Alumni Survey engagement activities, including post service surveys, to collect stories from Alumni and create systems for tracking SCC’s long-term impacts.</li></ol>Objective 3: RecruitmentThe VISTA will update and create systems for more efficient recruitment across programs:<ol><li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal">Review recruitment tools and processes and provide suggested updates to ensure recruitment best practices and consistent tracking recruitment efforts.</li><li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal">Determine the most successful recruitment engagement mechanisms through applicant audits and develop systems for future tracking.</li></ol>  Qualifications:<ul><li class="MsoNormal">Valid Driver’s License and insurable driving record per personnel policies.</li><li><ul><li class="MsoNormal">A personal vehicle is not necessary but recommended for personal travel, an organization vehicle will be provided for all work-related travel.</li></ul></li><li class="MsoNormal">Willingness to travel between Salida, CO and Durango, CO offices and willingness to visit crews and other seasonal program personnel in the field is preferred.</li><li class="MsoNormal">Language: English </li><li class="MsoNormal">Prior communications and outreach experience are preferred, along with an interest in conservation and/or non-profit organizations.</li><li class="MsoNormal">United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.</li><li class="MsoNormal">At least 17 years of age.</li><li class="MsoNormal">Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award</li><li class="MsoNormal">Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.</li></ul> Physical Requirements:Conservation Legacy is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals and will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodations to perform essential functions. As a corps program, SECC partners with public land managers to identify, plan and complete projects that improve public access, habitat quality and economic development. SECC is a program of Conservation Legacy, a nationwide network of conservation service organizations founded to move forward the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps.    Position Summary:  With direction and input from the Communications Team and the Executive Director, and in coordination with Individual Placement and Crew programming staff, the Communications Coordinator will design and implement outreach strategies for SECC. The successful candidate will lead external communications, coordinate internal story collection, and work with organization-wide Communications staff. The communications Coordinator will oversee all social media channels, website updates, publish email newsletters, and support Program Coordinators with recruitment outreach. The Communications Coordinator will assist in fundraising campaigns as needed. With support from the Executive Directors, the Communications Coordinator will create and manage an alumni outreach process. The Communications Coordinator will review all inquiries and direct them to the appropriate Program Director. The Communications Coordinator will provide support during member trainings and cohort calls and have an opportunity to facilitate sessions around communications strategies and best practices. This position will also be expected to travel several times per year for member training, staff and community engagement, and site visits.  Outcomes & Functions of Position: Program Communications<ul><li>Develop, with oversight from the Communications Director and Executive Director, a communication calendar for ongoing engagement with members and project partners.</li><li>Improve information sharing among members and supervisors.</li><li>Build SECC’s and Conservation Legacy’s brand recognition, in alignment with Conservation Legacy’s Strategic Plan.</li><li>Provide oversight to SECC’s internal and external communication to ensure they meet Conservation Legacy brand guidelines.</li><li>Work with program staff on external program communications and partner reporting, including, but not limited to, data collection and compiling end-of-the-year partner reports.</li><li>Coordinate and draft internal communications to ensure program staff needs and requests are implemented across all initiatives. </li><li>Serve as a liaison to Central Communications staff responsible for marketing and communications across the organization to further engage a unified message for all Conservation Legacy while keeping with the regional priorities and programming of SECC.</li><li>Collaborate with the Communications Team in having shared goals and projects and communicate/combine outreach efforts for the organization.    </li><li>Implement organization-wide communications efforts and provide updates to the Executive Director around goals and objectives for messaging, branding, and stories. </li><li>Monitor best practices to update communication methods and tools to effectively reach members, stakeholders, and other audiences. </li></ul> Marketing and Outreach<ul><li>Lead and expand program social media presence and engagement utilizing current and future platforms with support from Conservation Legacy’s Communications Team.</li><li>Build and implement a strategy for reaching new audiences through social media communication and other external communication.</li><li>Design flyers, graphics, and other marketing material.</li><li>Support recruitment efforts through developing materials and sharing opportunities.</li><li>Expand current communications materials to include all key programming and initiatives.</li><li>Coordinate attendance of events and meetings to build awareness and coordinate recruitment outreach efforts with recruitment director.</li></ul> Data Management<ul><li>Manage and update SECC website.</li><li>Create, manage and maintain program communications lists, including newsletter, recruitment contacts, and alumni.</li><li>Collect, compile, and catalog field-based media and content. </li><li>Monitor and utilize digital platform analytics to ensure best practices are in use.</li><li>Propose adjustments to communications efforts in response to analytical data.</li><li>Assist in the collection of information for reporting to partners and major funders; lead the design efforts for assigned reporting and delegate as needed to complete reporting. </li></ul> Alumni Outreach <ul><li>Explore alumni communication strategies for implementation with SECC members.</li><li>Develop and implement survey data to be distributed to Alumni.
