Fashion Assistant Buyer Employment Information
Fashion Assistant Buyer Overview
Fashion assistant buyers are responsible for keeping stores stocked with apparel, jewelry and accessories. Stores sell fashion and accessories for each of the four seasons; they order winter clothing in the middle of summer and stock clothing for the new season prior to the start of each season. Fashion assistant buyers look at market trends, identify new clothing designers, examine the needs of customers and add or remove clothing at the store on a regular basis. Fashion assistant buyers do not purchase clothing for the shops, but they will work with lead buyers. Assistant buyers examine trends and market conditions and present their findings to the head of the department. Fashion assistants can later work as fashion merchandisers, fashion buyers or in other fashion retail positions.

Retail buyers only need a high school diploma or the equivalent of a high school diploma before working in the field. More than 4 percent of buyers possess a degree higher than a bachelor's, and 29 percent of buyers have a bachelor's degree in fashion, marketing or another field. Understanding how point-of-sale software operates and having experience with accounting software is necessary.
