Food service director jobs are similar to food manager jobs. Directors handle many of the same tasks as managers do, but while individual managers might divide up tasks throughout the day, a director will perform the same tasks every day. They are also responsible for the entire running or a restaurant or food service company. They keep track of schedules, ensure that employees work a set number of hours every week, order new food and supplies for the restaurant and keep an eye on the restaurant itself. More than 33 percent of all food service directors have an associate's, bachelor's or advanced degree, and more than 28 percent of food service directors completed some college classes. More than 38 percent of directors have a high school diploma, GED or didn't finish high school. The industry prides experience over education and gives employees the chance to move up in a restaurant as they gain more experience. Though education isn't as important in this field as it is in others, food service directors do need a variety of skills. They must have knowledge of food and workplace safety, customer service skills and experience cooking and waiting on customers.

The future outlook of restaurant and food service jobs is low. Statistics show that food service director and manager jobs will only increase by 2 percent from 2012 to 2022, which means an increase in available jobs of 5,000. Though the availability of those jobs will grow at a slow rate, restaurants will need managers with an understanding of new technologies, including accounting software and other computer programs that keep track of the profits and losses. Managers and directors will also need to remain up to date on payroll software and changes in healthcare and other operations.
