French Teacher Job Overview

A French teacher is an individual who instructs non-French speakers on how to properly speak the language. Students from an array of levels learn from the individual, such as elementary students, high school students, and college students. Each of these educational levels require a different teaching style, and French teachers tweak their curriculum to suit the needs of the students.

Throughout a given semester, French teachers, as well as other foreign language teachers, construct lesson plans to immerse students in not only the language, but the culture of countries that speak the given language. They are also tasked with assessing the progress of each student and grading homework and exams. They may also have the privilege of chaperoning students to places such as France, Haiti, and other French-speaking countries.

French Teacher Job Education Requirements

The minimum educational requirement for a French teacher is a bachelor's degree, but with a variety of alternatives. Some teachers choose to earn a bachelor's in education with a French minor, while others do the opposite. Institutions of higher learning usually require a minimum of a master's degree, while universities often desire a Ph.D.

Upon completion of schooling, many French teachers choose to live abroad for a year to get a full understanding of the language. Once they return, all 50 states require that the teacher become licensed.

French Teacher Job Market

The job market for French teachers is weak, as many high schools and elementary schools cut language before any other core curriculum. However, affluent neighborhoods are a great market for French teachers. The growth rate for these educators is 6 percent, which is half the national average for all occupations.
