Maintenance Supervisor Overview

Maintenance Supervisors are directly responsible for overseeing the efforts of maintenance workers who install, repair or service property or machinery. They are charged with ordering repair parts, maintaining proper staffing levels and negotiating contracts with suppliers. The hours are flexible although Maintenance Supervisors are usually required to be on-call at specified times throughout the month to be ready to work and address issues at any time during the day or night.

Maintenance Supervisor Education Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent is the minimum requirement for Maintenance Supervisor jobs. Candidates will need basic reading and math skills to create and track work orders as well as calculate material quantities and measurements. Because supervisors need to work on a variety of mechanical appliances, having a solid understanding of how various machines and appliances work will be vital to success. Maintenance Supervisors who work on and oversee the servicing of air conditioning units will need to obtain HVAC certification in order to ensure compliance with federal regulations pertaining to the safe handling of coolant. Certification is obtained by passing a certification exam. Being able to work with people, both customers and employees, as well as having good organizational skills are a must in this career.
