NDT Technician Jobs Overview

NDT Technicians are responsible for testing the properties of technological systems, components and materials without causing damage. These technicians are required to test and solve problems with various parts of a machine or piece of equipment while keeping it intact, and they often work with highly sensitive, very expensive scientific machinery.

NDT Technician Educational Requirements

The majority of NDT Technicians have a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Due to the nature of the work, a base knowledge of health and safety regulations is required as is an eye for detail when analyzing the test results. Critical thinking and problem solving skills are a must, and a delicate hand can be beneficial when working with complex machinery. A large amount of on-the-job training is provided. Many NDT Technicians begin as apprentices or interns, and a certification is available but not always required.

NDT Technician Job Market

NDT Technicians are in high demand as many repairmen must take apart a product to find what is wrong with it. There is currently a projected growth of 30 percent by 2022 for Nondestructive Testing jobs. As medical science progresses and the technology involved becomes more complex, NDT Technicians will be in even higher demand. A similar position would be as an Process Technician.

NDT Technician Salary

NDT Technicians make anywhere from between $14 and $16 an hour at some locations to $22 to $24 an hour at others. Some annual salaries can be as high as $98,000. The pay is usually dependent on the experience of the technician and the size of the employer. Larger companies will pay more than a smaller clinic, although clinics that use highly specialized equipment may offer higher salaries for technicians who focus on that one machine.
