Training and Skills for Plumber Jobs

To begin your career as a plumber, you'll need a high school diploma or GED certificate. While a college education isn't typically required, you may have to complete specified vocational training. You can enroll in a two-year program at a plumbing trade school to become certified in pipe fitting, drainage systems, blueprint reading, and codes and regulations.

The next step is to complete a plumbing apprenticeship. This typically lasts four to five years and consists of 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training, and includes applied physics, chemistry, and mathematics instruction. Many apprenticeship programs are sponsored by trade associations, unions, and businesses.

Most states require you to obtain a license that typically requires two to five years of prior work experience and passing of an exam. This shows your trade knowledge and will allow you to work independently. Once you have your license, you will become a journeyman plumber. You can then advance to becoming a master plumber, project manager, or supervisor resulting in a higher salary and benefits.
