Project Management Careers Overview

Project Management Careers Overview

Project management positions are vital for keeping projects on track and within budget. People who hold project management jobs supervise all aspects of a project, coordinating the workforce to ensure work flows smoothly from start to finish. They are in charge of schedules and manage deadlines and budgets, too. Typically project managers are assertive and confident, traits essential to leading, coordinating and directing work teams. Flexibility and adaptability when it comes to change are vital project manager traits, as well.

Project Management Education

Although you can obtain a master's degree in project management from some universities, a bachelor's degree is typically the minimum educational requirement for project management careers. Some larger companies have entire project management departments and, in those organizations, entry-level project managers gain on-the-job-training through assisting established managers. Few companies require it, but some universities and colleges offer courses to certify project managers.

Project Management Job Market

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) doesn't track project manager careers, but Saint Mary's University of Minnesota (SMUM) says that project management careers are stable, even in an unstable economy. In 2006, SMUM had projected an increase of one million project management jobs by 2016. Even though the recession affected the growth rate for a few years, Saint Mary's now reports that job growth in this sector is back on course.

Project Management Salaries

Being a leader has its benefits and the salary for project manager careers tops the list. Of course individual salaries are set based on experience, education and even location, but the average annual wage for project management careers is $96,000, according to the BLS. It's reasonable to expect an entry-level position to pay less than that amount, but salaries for experienced project managers with credentials routinely break into the six-figure realm, according to SMUM.
