Quality Assurance Careers Overview

Quality Assurance Careers Overview

Quality assurance careers span over a wide range of industries. Any business that produces wholesale or retail products, from electronics to pharmaceuticals to clothing, requires quality assurance inspectors to analyze the quality of products and materials. The majority of quality assurance jobs are full-time positions, most often worked during regular business hours. If there's a production deadline to meet, though, putting in some overtime is usually required.

Quality Assurance Education

Typically a high school diploma is the minimum education required for quality assurance jobs, but there are types of quality assurance jobs that involve completely accurate, complex testing. Those advanced jobs usually go to the inspectors with the most experience, so on-the-job-training is valuable for more than getting your feet wet with an entry-level position. Also, automated inspection techniques are increasingly being used, requiring quality assurance inspectors to have experience using computers and software, as well as programming and operating inspection equipment.

Quality Assurance Job Market

Even though quality assurance is gradually becoming automated, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says that automation cannot entirely replace inspection by hand. Because of this, quality assurance careers are expected to grow over the next 10 years, increasing by six percent between 2012 and 2022,going up from 464,300 to 490,000.

Quality Assurance Salaries

Although quality assurance inspectors are typically full-time, many work part-time or shifts. That's why the BLS reports the median wage for quality assurance careers at an hourly rate of $16.57, instead of as an annual figure. If you have the experience and credentials to work as a quality assurance inspector in a specialized field, such as medical equipment or pharmaceuticals, you could earn a higher salary. According to the BLS, you could make as much as $28.29 per hour if you get into the top 10 percent.
